Bryce James held his first media session since arriving at the University of Arizona’s campus on Tuesday, where he touched on a wide range of topics. James was asked about what advice he had received from his father, LeBron James, and the message given was simple, yet important.

“Just working hard,” James said. “Just come in here, doing what you do best. Also, just making sure that even if you’re not having some good days, just always have the stay-positive mentality. Maybe you miss a shot, you get a turnover, don’t hang your head down, always keep your head up. Just push through, just stay positive.”

That’s easier said than done, but if James can have that mindset at all times, it’ll greatly benefit him. The 18-year-old is going to be put under a lot of pressure because he is LeBron’s son, and will have to tune out all that outside noise.

James, a three-star recruit according to 247 Sports, comes to Arizona after quite a high school journey. He first attended Sierra Canyon, but then transferred to Campbell Hall in May 2023 ahead of his junior year.

James then moved to Notre Dame in August before going back to Sierra Canyon in November. That’s three transfers in seven months. James would eventually end his high school career on a high note by winning the CIF State Championship. He reportedly had offers from Ohio State and Duquesne, but chose Arizona. James spoke about that decision during this media session as well.

“I probably say the environment, ’cause I know the fans, they really enjoy coming to the Arizona games and they like to get rowdy and loud,” James stated. “So, for me personally, I just want a real college experience, and for me, I think Arizona was definitely one of those colleges.”

James attended a game against Duke and loved the environment. He is a fan of head coach Tommy Lloyd’s approach as well, which focuses on player development.

James was also asked if all that his elder brother, Bronny James, had to go through played a role in his decision to become a Wildcat, and he made it clear he didn’t focus on it. What he is listening to is whatever advice Bronny gives him.

“Just staying consistent, be locked in, don’t be focused on any other thing besides just coming here, putting in the work, going hard every day, putting in the effort,” James said. “So that’s probably what he gives me.”

Bronny chose to go to USC, but suffered a cardiac arrest in July 2023 before he even got to suit up for them. He would eventually make his debut for the Trojans in December later that year.

Bronny headed to the NBA after just one year in college and was selected by the Los Angeles Lakers with the 55th pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. Father and son then made history by playing together in the 2024-25 season for the Lakers.

There was a lot of speculation about James potentially playing alongside his father and elder brother on the Lakers in 2026, but that’s in doubt now. LeBron’s future with the team is uncertain, and only time will tell how this entire situation pans out.

His passion for the sport was ignited after witnessing the high-octane offense of the Steve Nash-led Phoenix Suns. Among the Suns, Shawn Marion stood out to Gautam as an all-time underrated NBA player. Marion’s versatility as a defender and his rebounding prowess, despite being just 6’7”, impressed Gautam immensely. He admired Marion’s finishing ability at the rim and his shooting, despite an unconventional jump shot, believing that Marion’s skill set would have been even more appreciated in today’s NBA.This transformative experience not only deepened his love for basketball but also shaped his approach to sports writing, enabling him to connect with readers through vivid storytelling and insightful analysis.
