Despite being stunned by the blockbuster trade that sent Anthony Davis to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for Luka Doncic, LeBron James has decided that he intends to remain with the Los Angeles Lakers past the February 6 trade deadline, according to Senior NBA Insider Chris Haynes.

“League sources informed me that LeBron James intends to remain a member of the Los Angeles Lakers past the February 6 trade deadline. So even though the Lakers were able to pull off one of the biggest trades in recent history by acquiring Luka Doncic and moving AD to Dallas, LeBron James plans to stay with the Lakers.”

“Also, just want to give some background—I was told that the Lakers were very appreciative of the professionalism displayed by Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul and LeBron James. They felt like those two made this process a seamless one, and they appreciated them for their efforts in helping this all come together the way that it did.”

This report suggests that, while initially caught off guard, James has accepted the move and is ready to move forward with his new superstar teammate, Doncic.

The Luka-AD trade sent shockwaves through the NBA, but no one was more blindsided than LeBron James himself. Unlike previous big Lakers moves where LeBron was often consulted or at least informed, this deal happened without his knowledge.

James found out about the trade while having a family dinner after the Lakers’ victory over the Knicks, leading many to wonder whether this could influence his future with the team.

However, despite his initial shock and surprise, James has reportedly come to terms with the trade and is willing to work with Doncic to keep the Lakers in title contention. His decision to stay past the deadline is a clear indication that he sees potential in this new Lakers roster and is committed to making it work.

Chris Haynes also revealed that the Lakers front office was extremely appreciative of LeBron James and his agent, Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul, for their professionalism throughout the process. While Paul was informed of the trade discussions 48 hours in advance, he kept the information confidential, ensuring that the deal went through without leaks or unnecessary drama.

The Lakers valued the way Paul and LeBron handled the situation, understanding that major franchise-altering trades can be difficult for all parties involved. Their cooperation and level-headed approach allowed the Lakers to finalize the deal smoothly, securing their new franchise star in Doncic without distractions or public backlash.

LeBron James’ commitment to staying in Los Angeles means that the Lakers remain one of the most dangerous teams in the Western Conference. With Doncic now in the fold, the Lakers have an elite young superstar to carry the team forward, while LeBron continues to play at an elite level even at 40 years old.

With the February 6 trade deadline approaching, the Lakers may still look to make additional moves, particularly in the frontcourt, where they now lack a true defensive anchor after losing Davis. However, having LeBron and Doncic together immediately makes the Lakers a top-tier contender, especially if they can add another reliable big man to solidify their defense.

LeBron James’ decision to stay is a massive relief for Lakers fans, as it confirms that he is committed to competing with Doncic for another championship run. While the departure of Anthony Davis is a major change, the Lakers now have a future face of the franchise in Doncic, ensuring that they remain a powerhouse both now and in the years to come.
