The shocking Luka Doncic-Anthony Davis trade that sent the NBA world into chaos was kept under wraps so tightly that even LeBron James had no idea it was happening. However, one person did know—Rich Paul, the agent representing Anthony Davis

According to Senior NBA Insider Chris Haynes, Paul was informed of the trade discussions 48 hours before the deal was finalized, but as a professional, he kept the information to himself, ensuring it remained confidential.

“I’m going to take you behind the scenes a little bit. I was told that the Mavericks initiated this. They contacted the Lakers, and I was told that the Lakers reached out to Rich Paul after the inquiry from the Dallas Mavericks.”

“The Lakers explained that they’re looking for LeBron James’ replacement—somebody who can initiate the offense, a dominant scorer out on the perimeter, somebody who can kind of take over the reins.”

“And Dallas? They’re looking for front-court help. And AD—Nico over there, the general manager for the Dallas Mavericks—they are very tight. Matter of fact, Nico was a Nike rep. He’s the one that helped sign AD to Nike. There’s a connection there.”

“I was told AD was initially shocked, but as of right now, I’m told he’s feeling good about the situation and moving forward. So that’s kind of what happened behind the scenes and what led to this—the Dallas Mavericks initiated this.”

Chris Haynes provided insight into how this blockbuster trade came about. Contrary to speculation, it was the Dallas Mavericks who initiated the talks. Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison, who has a longstanding relationship with Anthony Davis from their time at Nike, reached out to the Lakers to inquire about a potential deal.

Dallas had a clear vision—they wanted to add elite frontcourt talent and improve their defense, believing that Anthony Davis would be a better fit for their championship aspirations than Luka Doncic.

The Lakers, on the other hand, had one goal in mind—finding a future franchise player to succeed LeBron James. With Doncic being a 25-year-old generational talent, the opportunity was too good to pass up. However, before making any moves, Lakers management reached out to Rich Paul, as Davis’ agent, to inform him about the inquiry from Dallas.

Despite knowing about the potential trade nearly two full days before it happened, Rich Paul kept the information confidential, which speaks to his professionalism and integrity as one of the most respected agents in the NBA.

Even though he is not only Davis’ agent but also LeBron James’ close friend and longtime representative, Paul did not share any details with LeBron, ensuring that trade discussions remained private until a decision was made.

This explains why LeBron was blindsided when the news broke. After leading the Lakers to a dominant victory over the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden, James sat down for a family dinner, only to be stunned by headlines about Davis being traded for Doncic

His genuine shock and confusion at that moment were a testament to just how well Rich Paul handled the situation, maintaining confidentiality despite his deep personal and professional ties to all parties involved.

Initially, Davis was shocked when he learned that the trade was actually happening. However, reports now indicate that he is feeling good about the situation and looking forward to the new opportunity in Dallas. Davis will now get to play alongside Kyrie Irving and Klay Thompson, and—perhaps most importantly—he finally gets to play power forward full-time with Daniel Gafford and Dereck Lively II providing support in the frontcourt.

Rich Paul’s ability to handle sensitive trade negotiations with discretion highlights why he is one of the most powerful agents in the NBA. While LeBron James was kept out of the loop and stunned by the news, Paul did what was expected of him—ensuring the deal went smoothly while prioritizing his client’s best interests.

Now, as the dust settles, the NBA landscape has changed forever, and both Davis and Doncic will embark on new chapters with their respective teams.
