Luka Doncic was mic’d up when the Los Angeles Lakers made a trip to the UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital. Doncic was in good spirits at the facility, so much so that he made a hilarious declaration when he got his hands on a football.
“I’ll be the greatest quarterback ever,” Doncic said.
Doncic then threw a pass that appeared to have been off target and hilariously blamed the ball. The 26-year-old then claimed to be a combination of two of the best quarterbacks we have seen.
“That’s a bad ball,” Doncic stated. “I’m a mix between Tom Brady and Lamar Jackson.”
(starts at 1:08 mark):
We have seen Doncic dish out some touchdown passes to LeBron James in their short time together as teammates. The five-time All-Star could potentially accurately sling a football if he tried his hand at the sport.
What Doncic absolutely cannot do, though, is run around the field like Lamar Jackson. The Baltimore Ravens superstar is a supreme athlete and might just be the best in that regard we have seen at the quarterback position.
Doncic could undergo intense training for years, and he still won’t be anywhere near the athlete that Jackson is.
This actually isn’t the first time that Doncic has talked about the position. He was asked during an interview with Overtime if he watched the NFL and stated he is a big fan. The follow-up question was about what position he’d play, and Doncic went quarterback.
“Not easy, but I would play that,” Doncic said.
The interviewer had some doubts about whether Doncic could throw a football and was presented with some video evidence.
(starts at 15:45 mark):
You don’t necessarily have to be very mobile to play quarterback, so Doncic could perhaps have played the position if he had switched sports in his youth. We’re glad he didn’t, though, as it’s unlikely he’d have been as great at football as he is at basketball.
Doncic averaged 28.2 points, 8.2 rebounds, 7.7 assists, 1.8 steals, and 0.4 blocks per game for the Lakers and Dallas Mavericks in 2024-25. The fact that this was viewed as a bit of a down season tells you all you need to know about the standard he’s held to.
