Bam Adebayo spoke recently about the potential of having De’Aaron Fox come to the Miami Heat, and how he would pitch him to make the jump. In an interview with Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald, Adebayo kept it real, noting that he wouldn’t sell his friend a dream and tell him exactly what to expect when it comes to the Heat and Erik Spoelstra, whether he wants to hear it or not.
“I wait for the question. Obviously, if you’re intrigued by the situation, you’re going to ask anyway. The thing is I’m telling you the whole truth. It’s not a recruiting pitch to me. I’m telling you the truth. You’re going to get here, you know what it is. There is no BS, there is no, ‘I’m going to get my numbers.’ No, no, no.”
“This is team basketball here. We’re going to play both sides of the basketball. So that’s 82 games, plus playoffs. I’m not sugarcoating anything. You make your decision from there. To me, if I consider you like family like De’Aaron, I’m not going to lie to you. You’re getting a coach that’s not going to let you go below your standard and sometimes that does get annoying.”
Bam added that playing under a coach like Spoelstra, who pulls no punches, can be challenging to a player’s ego. However, he believes that it is important to go through that experience, especially in an age where most coaches are dismissed by franchises within a year or two, and players don’t get to build a dynamic with them.
“Sometimes that does rub you the wrong way. But it’s a coach that expects more out of you because he sees something. When you have a coach like that, you can’t take that for granted. There have been many coaches in some organizations that they’re there for a season.”
“How are you supposed to bank equity with a coach who’s only there for a season, two seasons? You can’t really hone in and become something when it’s like that. For us, we got a coach that’s going to be here for a very long time that really cares about winning, but also cares about us.”
Adebayo also spoke about his relationship with the Sacramento Kings star. He noted that the two share a very special bond, dating back to their days playing together for the Kentucky Wildcats. The two are very close friends, and Adebayo was even a groomsman at Fox’s wedding.
“That’s my man. That’s my college roommate. Our relationship, for me, I think is very solid. I was in his wedding, I was a groomsman. That just shows the level of respect. That just shows the level of respect and obviously the bond that we have.”
The Miami Heat are one of the many teams that have been linked to a trade for De’Aaron Fox ever since news broke that the Kings were open to dealing him. The Heat are currently dealing with their own trade saga, as they look for a suitable trade partner for Jimmy Butler, who is on the outs with the team.
Should The Heat Trade For De’Aaron Fox?
The market for De’Aaron Fox is hot, with over a dozen NBA teams looking to land the former All-Star. In fact, Sam Amick of The Athletic is reporting that more than half of all NBA teams have made some inquiries with about Fox.
The move makes a lot of sense, as the Heat could part ways with a disgruntled All-Star and land another All-Star player who has experience playing alongside their starting center. We identified the Heat as one of the six best destinations for De’Aaron Fox, and with good reason.
Perhaps the Heat could join the sweepstakes for the Kings’ point guard. He is exactly what they are looking for, in that he is a young player who can come in and make an immediate impact, and has a contract that expires in 2026 – two very important things the Heat made clear in their trade demands for Butler.
