Giannis Antetokounmpo says he’s fully committed to the Bucks for now, but he’s keeping things realistic about the future. Speaking with The Athletic’s Eric Nehm, the two-time MVP said he’s “locked in” with his teammates and coaching staff, but admitted that in six or seven months, his mindset could change and that it’s only human to re-evaluate when the time comes.

“I think I’ve communicated with my teammates, communicated with the people I respect and love that the moment I step on this court or in this facility, I wear this jersey, the rest does not matter. I’m locked into whatever I have in front of me,” said Giannis, via Eric Nehm. “But if in six, seven months, I change my mind I think that’s human too, you’re allowed to make any decision you want. But I’m locked in. I’m locked into this team. I’m locked in to these guys, to this group and to this coaching staff and to myself.”

Giannis’ future has gotten increasingly murky over the years. After leading the franchise to a championship in 2021, he initially committed his basketball future to the Bucks and vowed to continue his feats of greatness. But now, after years of disappointment and failure, Giannis’ loyalties are once again uncertain as he approaches his 13th NBA season.

With averages of 30.4 points, 11.9 rebounds, and 6.5 assists per game last season, Giannis did everything in his power to lift the Bucks to contention but they never got past the first round in back-to-back seasons with Damian Lillard. While Giannis still has another three years and $170+ million on his contract, he reportedly considered all his options this summer and even flirted with the idea of a move to the Knicks. Through it all, he had to deal with moving his family to Greece, which raised rumors that prompted a fierce response from the two-time MVP.

Ultimately, Giannis Antetokounmpo decided against forcing his way out and he’s set to play out this season in a Bucks jersey. Still, while he may be staying put for now, the pressure is now on the Bucks to make Giannis happy and ensure that they are doing everything to prove to him that they are in the business of winning. This summer, they proved that with the addition of Myles Turner, who adds size toughness, and elite defense under the rim.

With players like Kyle Kuzma and Bobby Portis, the Bucks believe they have enough scoring punch to keep up with the best teams and give Giannis the support he needs to carry them deep into the playoffs. Only time will tell if this team can reach the depths of the NBA playoff bracket but they have Giannis and that’s enough to put them in the title conversation.

In the meantime, it’s important for the Bucks to establish a lasting culture that encourages Giannis to stay for the rest of his prime. That starts with building championship habits and having an open line of communication between Giannis, his teammates, and the front office leadership staff.

Giannis is saying all the right things for now, but history tells us his words carry weight. He’s never been afraid to put pressure on Milwaukee to build a winner, and this year will be no different. If the Bucks come up short again, that same honesty could turn into action. For the moment, he’s locked in and ready to lead, but six months from now, the entire league might be waiting on his next move.
