Shams Charania of ESPN is reporting that Joel Embiid and the Philadelphia 76ers are looking at options to deal with the former’s injuries. Embiid is struggling with a knee injury he sustained last year. And despite his desires to play through it, the 76ers could allow him to get surgery on the injury. Embiid is scheduled for tests on his knees this week, and he and the team will decide on surgery after consulting with experts.

“The Philadelphia 76ers and Joel Embiid are consulting doctors and considering alternative options, such as surgery, for his injured left knee, sources told ESPN on Sunday.”

“Both sides have hoped for progress in Embiid’s condition, but his determination to play and current treatments – including regular injections, sources said – have not led to any improvement. Embiid is scheduled to undergo tests on his knee early this week, at which point both parties will collaborate with specialists on the best route forward, sources said.

Joel Embiid had said a few weeks ago that he needs surgery and a full offseason to recover from his current injury. After the 76ers’ game on Thursday, Embiid noted that his injuries have affected him mentally, and he can’t trust himself anymore. Clearly, the injuries are taking a toll on the former MVP both physically and mentally.

Kevin Garnett believes that the 76ers should call time on Embiid this season and shut him down so he can recover. However, not everyone is as sympathetic. Shannon Sharpe slammed Embiid’s eating habits and how he takes care of himself for his current injury predicament.

This is the latest injury on Embiid’s long list. The Cameroonian big man has struggled with fitness throughout his entire career. And it is now beginning to negatively impact the 76ers, as his injuries have cost them yet another opportunity at a winning basketball season,

The 76ers Should Begin Tanking

Should Embiid get surgery soon, the 76ers should just commit themselves to a tank. They currently sit 12th in the Eastern Conference with a 20-36 record. They have no real chance of turning this around, and trying to play through this season and compete is going to have an adverse effect on their future.

The Oklahoma City Thunder have the 76ers’ 2025 first-round pick. However, that pick is top-5 protected. So if the 76ers commit to tank, it will allow them to get a better chance at keeping that pick for themselves. The 2025 NBA Draft class is one of the best in recent memory, and the franchise could find another future star to pair with Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and Paul George.

At this point, Paul George, who signed a massive four-year, $212 million contract with the 76ers this offseason, has not worked out. That isn’t to say that his signing will be remembered as a bust. But he can’t redeem himself this season. It might be best for the 76ers to shut him down along with Embiid and focus on getting them both to full fitness come time for the 2025-26 NBA season.
