The Los Angeles Lakers are the closest squad to being a superteam that is in the NBA right now. They have two of the top five players in the league and the undisputed best player in the world LeBron James. The Lakers also have excellent secondary talents in the forms of Dennis Schroder and Montrezl Harrell, and veteran leaders such as Marc Gasol to back up the superstars.
While there are some very good teams in the NBA right now, the Lakers are easily the number one favorites for the title and have the championship to lose. To restore parity, 3 superteams can be created to challenge the Lakers for the title. By analyzing the major blockbuster deals across the league, here are the 3 teams that can be created this season with the best chance to knock off the mighty Lakers.
Brooklyn Nets Superteam
Trade Package: Spencer Dinwiddie, Caris LeVert, Jarrett Allen, future first-round picks for James Harden
The Brooklyn Nets are going all-in this season with Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving. The duo might be the best in the NBA right now other than LeBron and Davis, and they have the scoring talent to boost them to the Eastern Conference Finals. If they can finally strike a deal for superstar James Harden, it is a done deal that the Nets will be playing in the Finals.
By giving away their entire depth and future to win-now, the Nets can have the best starting five in the league with Kyrie Irving, James Harden, Kevin Durant, and Deandre Jordan. Defeating the Lakers will still be hard, but the Nets scoring power will usurp that of Davis and James and they might be able to win the 2021 NBA title.
Golden State Warriors Superteam
Trade Package: James Wiseman, Andrew Wiggins, Eric Paschall, two first-round picks (one of the picks will be a 2021 first-round draft pick from Minnesota - protected for selections 1-3 in 2021 and unprotected in 2022) for Joel Embiid
The Golden State Warriors have lost Klay Thompson for the season yet again, which effectively ended the championship aspirations this season. Stephen Curry is still on the squad, and they drafted James Wiseman with the No. 2 overall pick. By packaging Wiseman and their young assets in Andrew Wiggins, Eric Paschall, and future picks; the Warriors can jump right back in the mix with a trade for superstar Joel Embiid.
The Warriors can have the best little man big man duo in the league if they acquire Joel Embiid, who had a down year but still averaged 23.0 PPG and 11.6 RPG for the season. Embiid is the most talented offensive center in the NBA, and there is no doubt a Big Three of Embiid, Curry, and Draymond Green will challenge the Lakers in the postseason.
Los Angeles Clippers Superteam
Trade Package: Ivica Zubac, Patrick Beverley, Mfiondu Kabengele for LaMarcus Aldridge
The Los Angeles Clippers are running it back with Kawhi Leonard and Paul George, meaning they will be one of the best teams in the West yet again. The only thing missing to take them over the top is a trade for the third star like LaMarcus Aldridge. Aldridge is one of the few big men in the NBA that can create his own offense from the block or the post. His ability from mid-range and even from three makes the Clippers a more valuable contender than they currently are.
The Lakers have Anthony Davis, but the Clippers can match up with Aldridge and Ibaka. LeBron James is the best player in the world, but Kawhi Leonard is one of the best defenders in the league and is a 2-time Defensive Player of the Year. Paul George is also an elite defender which gives the Clippers more options to throw at The King late in games. On offense, the Clippers will have three go-to scorers with Aldridge, George, and Leonard to compete with the Lakers superstar duo. Out of the three superteams that could beat the Lakers in a Finals series, the Clippers superteam might be the best one.
