Patrick Beverley spoke recently on his podcast about his dynamic with Kawhi Leonard. He told a story about a conversation he had with Leonard during their time together on the Clippers, where he told him why he carries such a calm and laidback demeanor. Another story Beverley shared revealed that Leonard has the same championship rim from the Raptors‘ 2019 NBA championship run in his backyard.

“I always like to give Kawhi’s wisdom. He goes to me, ‘Ay Pat, you know slow is pro’. 15 minutes go by I text him – ‘Slow is pro, what do you mean?’… [Kawhi says] ‘I just mean in life, period, Pat. Mistakes usually happen when you rush. So, slow is pro. And guess what Pro is, Pat? You guessed right, it’s slow… Yeah Pat, we’re all crazy, you just like to show yours.’ Shoutout to Kawhi man, he’s great. That’s my dog.”

“I go to his house in San Diego. ‘Kawhi, what the f**k you doing, man? Let’s work’. He says ‘Yeah, I’m in San Diego. You coming down?’. I get to his crib. I look at his basketball rim. It isn’t a normal basketball rim, it’s an NBA-size rim. I go ‘You just got this from the gym?’… He goes ‘It’s the rim that we won a championship with in Toronto. I had them give me the rim and put it in my backyard.'”

Beverley having a Toronto Raptors rim in his backyard is both hilarious and very fitting. Leonard was instrumental in the franchise’s one and to date, only NBA championship win in 2019. His arrival to replace DeMar DeRozan, combined with LeBron James, their perennial kryptonite, leaving the Eastern Conference, opened the doors for the Raptors to win the NBA championship.

Leonard and Beverley played together on the Clippers for two seasons and looked like favorites to win the NBA championship in 2020 and 2021. However, due to the pandemic and injuries, their championship win never came about.

Kawhi Leonard Beloved In Toronto

Leonard, despite only playing for the Raptors for just one season, is considered a legend for the franchise. His one season there was so memorable, as he helped the team finally get over the hump and win the NBA championship after years of playoff heartbreak.

When Leonard left for the Clippers in 2019, Raptors fans were completely understanding. Every time Leonard returns to play at the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, he is given a warm welcome from the fans in attendance. His championship win meant a lot to the fanbase, even if he is no longer with the team.

The same cannot be said for the San Antonio Spurs. Leonard won an NBA championship with the Spurs in 2014, even being named Finals MVP. However, his controversial departure from the team really soured fans on him.

He got booed by Spurs fans last night during the Clippers game. However, while Leonard was hurt by the reaction, he praised the fans for being so passionate about their team.
