The Detroit Pistons tanked as hard as they could for Victor Wembanyama and won just 17 games in the season, but the 2023 Draft Lottery dropped them to the fifth pick after their disastrous season.
Bill Simmons found Detroit’s fall in the draft lottery hilarious, comparing it to a sucker punch and saying the team needs medical attention.

Missing out on the Victor Wembanyama sweepstakes had to have hurt the Pistons, but falling all the way to five has to feel worse. The Pistons would have had an eye on Brandon Miller if they remained in the top three but are now likely to look at options such as Ausar Thompson or Cameron Whitmore. The Fadeaway World mock draft has the Pistons selecting Whitmore with the fifth pick.
How Bright Is The Future In Detroit?
Missing out on Wembanyama means the Pistons won’t enjoy the immediate return to contention that they had hoped drafting him would lead to. Despite that, they have built a solid roster over the last few years that was primed and ready for a star to join. Cade Cunningham is already the leader of the team but missed most of the season due to injury.
Detroit also has solid pieces across the roster such as Jaden Ivey and Jalen Duren, and has actually managed to make James Wiseman look like a usable NBA center. Bojan Bogdanovic serves as the veteran of the squad and the Pistons held out on trading him during the season because they wanted to be competitive this season.
With Whitmore and the salary cap room the team has, they could quietly make some massive moves in the summer to continue the progression of this roster after a disastrous year.
