Superstar LeBron James is still playing at a high level, recently leading the Los Angeles Lakers to the Western Conference Finals. However, the Lakers ended up getting swept by the Denver Nuggets.
After the series ended, LeBron James suggested that he could retire ahead of next season. This has led to a lot of speculation and opinions around the NBA world. Paul George recently chimed in on the discussion, pointing out that it should be the superstar’s decision and that people shouldn’t be shocked that “he’s thinking about retirement”.
“I mean, that’s LeBron’s decision,” George said per Joey Mistretta of ClutchPoints. “He’s given us 20 amazing years, it’s crazy that we’re still baffled that he’s thinking about retirement with all he’s done and all he’s given this game. I think… at some point, I think that’s what he’s holding onto… I hope he can…he may have just taken time off to re-gather, regroup and come back when it’s time to play with his son.”
“Again, all he’s done for this league, as a mentor, as a leader, it will be nice for him to have that part where he can be satisfied that he’s given the game everything and he’s gone out the way he wanted to.”
There is no doubt that if LeBron James wanted to retire, nobody would blame him. He has accomplished everything there is to accomplish in his game, and his legacy is set in stone.
During the postseason, LeBron James put up 24.5 PPG, 9.9 RPG, and 6.5 APG for the Los Angeles Lakers. He was still playing at a high level despite a foot injury, and we’ll see just how good he looks if he decides to come back next season.
Charles Barkley Doesn’t Think LeBron James Will Retire This Season
There is no doubt that for many, it is hard to see LeBron James retiring while still playing at a superstar level. NBA legend Charles Barkley noted that there is a financial incentive for him to keep playing as well, claiming that James wouldn’t leave $100 million on the table.
“Hell no LeBron ain’t going to retire,” Barkley stated. “I love LeBron, but he knew what he was doing. He knew what the hell he was doing. First of all, he going to make $50 million a year the next two years. He ain’t walking away from $100 million, but I don’t think he should have said anything about that.”
It will be interesting to see what LeBron James decides to do in the future. There are clearly arguments for both retirement and the continuation of his career, and we’ll have to wait for his decision.
