Paul George was lavish in his praise for the Minnesota Timberwolves rising star Anthony Edwards

Speaking on his podcast, Podcast P with Paul George, the LA Clippers star believed that Edwards would soon dominate the NBA.

“It’s pretty special with who he’s becoming. To be ready at that age, at this stage, you putting him amongst the young stars he’s gonna be competing with for the next 10-15 years. Now he’s becoming the alpha of them… I saw the star potential in him.”

This is rich praise from George, who has seen Edwards play up close. And in all fairness, the guard deserves the flowers, given how he elevated the Timberwolves to a playoff contender alongside Karl-Anthony Towns and Rudy Gobert this past season.

At the time of writing, Edwards gears up to help Team USA gun for gold at the 2023 FIBA World Cup. The side is currently on a 2-0 run with wins over New Zealand and Greece. In both games, Edwards has double-digit performances as the team looks poised to win the maximum reward.

On the NBA front, he made headlines with a $260 million deal he inked for five years. His new contract will be in effect from the 2024-25 season. Edwards is now the fourth player to get the maximum rookie-scale extension so far this summer, joining Indiana Pacers’ Tyrese Haliburton, Charlotte Hornets’ LaMelo Ball, and Memphis Grizzlies’ Desmond Bane.

Anthony Edwards Is The Minnesota Timberwolves X-Factor In The 2023-24 Season

Despite their inconsistent and injury-riddled 2022-23 season, the Minnesota Timberwolves showed glimpses of being a legitimate threat.

The key for this team, though, will be Edwards — a notion that’s proved right with the team’s willingness to offer him a mammoth contract. If he indeed rises to the level that most believe he can get to, nothing will be stopping the side from becoming a bonafide playoff contender.

Edwards, 22, averaged 24.6 points per game for the Timberwolves last season, along with 5.8 rebounds and 4.4 assists. As an NBA All-Star in just his third season, there is no doubt that Edwards has some serious talent. Only time will tell, though, if he can keep up his level of consistency.
