Paul George Refuses To Answer If He Or Joel Embiid Will Take The Final Shot On The 76ers

Paul George wasn't prepared to have a podcast guest question him about a 'last-shot' situation on the 76ers with him and Joel Embiid.

Paul George invited OKC Thunder big man Chet Holmgren onto his podcast but nearly regretted that decision where Chet put the new 76ers forward in a tough spot by asking who’d be the final shot taker on the 76ers between George and Joel Embiid. This led to a very politically correct answer by George, who passed the question over to new head coach Nick Nurse.

Chet Holmgren: “Let me try and f**k up the chemistry. Y’all need a bucket at the end of the game, who’s shooting the shot?”

Paul George: “That’s a Nick Nurse question. Whoever Nick Nurse draw it up for, we gon’ get the best shot.”

Chet Holmgren: “I’m going to continue to f**k up the chemistry. If it’s not you, will you be salty?”

Paul George: “Nah, I’ve dealt with that. I’ve been on teams with other superstars, we live and die by whoever takes it..”

Holmgren was jokingly instigating beef between George and his new teammate Embiid, though every NBA player knows that there are very few teams with a defined final shot-taker. Even Stephen Curry was passing up final shot opportunities to the likes of Jordan Poole and Klay Thompson in recent seasons.

If clutch shot-makers like Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving have found a way to manage their egos and defer to the other in final shot situations for better looks, the 76ers will find a way as well. George just spent years alongside Kawhi Leonard and shared a star role with Russell Westbrook on the Thunder before that.

The final shot on the 76ers won’t be between George and Embiid alone, as Tyrese Maxey has proven himself capable of rising to those situations if he’s required to. Coach Nurse will likely try and use two of the stars as decoy options for the third star, and it’ll be fascinating to see how he puts this talent together.

Paul George Thinks This Is A Perfect Situation For Him

George joined the 76ers at the start of free agency, with the avid podcaster having gotten multiple opportunities to speak about his future in Philadelphia. He said he felt like this team-up was inevitable, with Embiid being a close personal friend and George admiring Maxey’s game.

“I thought everything aligned perfectly. Where they’re at and trying to go vs where I’m trying to get to as well. I think we got a real legitimate shot (of winning a title). I’ve always been a fan of Tyrese (Maxey) and Joel from afar, and Joel has secretly been one of my closest All-Star Game friends.

“It kinda felt inevitable that we would link up and be teammates. I’m all in… No better place to do it, to win in, than Philadelphia to me. With the fan base, just the passion that goes into sports here in Philadelphia, there’s really no other place I wanted to align with and win in.”

George is coming off averaging 22.6 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 3.5 assists on the Clippers last season. He’ll hope to be the final piece that Philly needs to not only break the second-round ceiling they’ve been caught under but also to bring the team its first title in 40 years.
