Paul George made headlines with his decision to sign a lucrative $212 million deal with the Philadelphia 76ers, leaving behind the Los Angeles Clippers. The signing has sparked significant discussion among fans and media, not only for the boost it gives the 76ers but also for the controversy it ignited due to comments made by Dallas Rutherford, his friend and co-host of the “Podcast P with Paul George.”

Dallas Rutherford: “PHILLY. “

Clippers fan: “U best turn off them comments. They coming for u pause. I’m warning.”

Dallas Rutherford: “Huh? lol.”

Clippers fan: “Clippers fans who hate pg. I’m telling u. They hate u and Jackie because that podcast.”

Dallas Rutherford: “Clippers suck anyways lol.”

Clippers fan: “The switch up is nuts. Wow.”

Dallas Rutherford: “It’s a joke. But I do think they are crazy for not paying what him what they paid kawaii.”

Rutherford celebrated George’s new deal with an enthusiastic social media post. Anticipating backlash from Clippers fans, a concerned follower warned Rutherford about the potential negative reactions. The fan explained that Clippers fans harbored resentment towards George and his podcast co-hosts due to the controversial nature of their discussions.

Rutherford, however, was undeterred. In response, he bluntly criticized the Clippers, declaring his disapproval of the franchise. This remark did not sit well with the fan, who accused Rutherford of quickly switching allegiance from a team that had been George’s home for five years.

Rutherford, showing no remorse, justified his stance by bringing up the Clippers’ handling of Kawhi Leonard’s contract. He criticized the franchise for not offering George a similar deal, arguing that it was unreasonable for the Clippers to undervalue George in comparison to Leonard.

Reports from ESPN’s Brian Windhorst shed light on the contract dispute that led to George’s departure. The Clippers offered George a three-year deal, in contrast to the four-year, $212 million contract he received from the 76ers. Windhorst revealed that the Clippers had signed Leonard to a three-year, $153 million extension without informing George, which soured the relationship between George and the franchise.

Leonard had publicly expressed optimism about George signing a new deal with the Clippers, but the lack of communication regarding Leonard’s contract left George feeling undervalued. This mishandling played a significant role in George’s decision to move to Philadelphia, where he received a contract befitting his stature.

Rutherford’s public criticism and the ensuing social media fallout highlight the underlying tensions and missteps in the Clippers’ management of their star players. As George embarks on a new chapter with the 76ers, the Clippers are left to ponder the ramifications of their contract decisions and the loss of a key player.

The Clippers May Have Been Right In Not Caving Into Paul George’s Demands

The Clippers’ decision to resist Paul George’s demands for a four-year contract extension may have been a prudent move. George, at 34, was seeking a long-term commitment, whereas the Clippers were only willing to match the three-year extension they had previously given to Kawhi Leonard.

Paul George has undoubtedly been a vital player for the Clippers, but his career peak has never quite reached the heights of Leonard’s. However, George’s availability has been more reliable compared to the injury-prone Leonard. Despite this, the financial implications and long-term commitment of a four-year contract presented significant risks for the Clippers.

The Philadelphia 76ers offered George a staggering $212 million over four years. By the final year of this contract, when George will be 38, he will be earning $56 million annually. The uncertainty of an aging player maintaining elite performance levels is a considerable gamble, and the Clippers were understandably cautious about committing to such a deal.

The Clippers had a plan to retain a strong core, including bringing back both George and James Harden. Harden, who is also 34, accepted a more modest two-year deal worth $70 million. The Clippers were prepared to offer George a three-year contract valued at around $150 million. This offer was competitive and aligned with the team’s strategy of balancing financial prudence with retaining key talent.

The new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) has made it increasingly difficult for teams to manage the salaries of three superstars without facing substantial luxury tax penalties. Despite this, the Clippers were willing to navigate these challenges to maintain a roster featuring George, Leonard, and Harden. However, George’s insistence on a four-year deal was a sticking point.

By not caving into George’s demands, the Clippers avoided the potential pitfalls of a long-term commitment to an aging player. The decision reflects a strategic approach to roster management, prioritizing flexibility and financial sustainability over the risk of overextending for a player nearing the twilight of his career.

While this choice might disappoint some fans in the short term, it could position the Clippers more favorably in the long run by maintaining the ability to adapt and invest in future opportunities.
