The New Orleans Pelicans were eliminated by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the play-in tournament, despite the best efforts of star Brandon Ingram. Zion Williamson notably didn’t play in the game, as he had not been cleared to suit up, even on a minutes restriction.

Zion Williamson’s durability issues have been well-documented throughout his career, and he only averages 28.5 games a season. Recently, Pelicans GM David Griffin put “a big part” of the blame on Williamson, claiming that the young star has a lot “he can do better”.

“I think a big part is on him,” Griffin said per Christian Clark of NOLA.com. “I think there is a lot he can do better. And he would, I think, tell you that. I think we need to do a better job examining the whole situation top to bottom a little bit better.”

There is no doubt that there are certain things every athlete can do better in terms of improving their overall durability and availability. For Zion Williamson, it is imperative that he figures out the best way to stay on the court, as it is crucial for him to play as much as possible to continue improving.

Even though his season was ended by a hamstring injury, Zion Williamson was stellar for the New Orleans Pelicans when he was healthy. He averaged 26.0 PPG, 7.0 RPG, and 4.6 APG, and hopefully, we get to see him dominate over a longer period of time next year.

Kendrick Perkins Thinks The New Orleans Pelicans Should Trade Zion Williamson

There is no doubt that the consistent injuries are concerning when it comes to Zion Williamson. In fact, Kendrick Perkins previously suggested that the Pelicans need to trade Zion Williamson, claiming that he can’t be trusted to be a franchise player.

“I would actually trade Zion… Can you trust him to be your franchise guy? Since he came into the league, no. You can’t trust that he’s gonna be available on the floor… This is starting to be a trend.”

It will be interesting to see what the New Orleans Pelicans do regarding Zion Williamson. Trading a generational talent is generally a losing proposition for any franchise, but it’s clear that Zion Williamson’s durability issues have made this a legitimate option for the team.

With that being said, giving up on a young talent who is only 22 would not be a wise move. There have been players that have managed to become more durable as they got older, and perhaps that can be the case for Zion Williamson as well.
