Former Seattle Supersonics star Shawn Kemp will no longer be detained and charged with a crime following the shooting incident in Washington.
Per the Tacoma Police Department, Kemp’s actions were ruled as self-defense, and he will not be charged. Kemp was released from jail at 1:00 p.m. Pacific Time on Thursday, per Pierce County booking records.
To briefly recap the series of events, Kemp was tracking stolen items from his car, and when he approached the car that stole some of his things, shots were fired at him, and he retaliated by opening fire himself.
Prior to releasing him, the department had earlier issued a statement regarding the shooting incident.
In their tweet, they wrote “At 1:58 pm, an altercation between the occupants of 2 cars led to shots being fired at a parking lot in the 4500 block of S. Steele St. One car fled. No injuries were reported. A gun was recovered. A 53-year-old male was booked for Drive-By Shooting. The investigation is ongoing.”

While they did keep Kemp’s name out, reports of the player being involved did the rounds soon after.
Shawn Kemp Has Had His Share Of Troubles With The Law
News of Kemp’s arrest came as a rude shock to the NBA community. The six-time All-Star was one of the most-feared players in the 90s and while he was known as a fierce competitor on the hardwood, he did have his legal woes off of it.
He was first arrested for possession of drugs in 2005 and that sent his career careening down as he couldn’t ink a deal following the murky scandal. The following year, he was again arrested for misdemeanor marijuana possession in Texas.
Now, he finds himself in trouble again, although he has been cleared for now. As he attempts to put the traumatic incident behind him, one can only hope that Kemp will stay away from more trouble with the law in the days to come.
