Bobby Portis is an NBA Champion who has carved out an ideal role for himself on a perennial title contender like the Milwaukee Bucks.
However, it took him years to get to this point. He started out as a first-round rookie on the Chicago Bulls, sharing a locker room with Derrick Rose, a player he used to trash on Twitter because he was a Miami Heat and LeBron James fan.
Portis revealed the story on JJ Redick’s podcast.
“Even when I got drafted, I said ‘f**k D-Rose’ or something like old on my Twitter and when I got drafted, it went viral. I was a big-time Miami Heat fan, loved the Heat, loved the Heatles, shout out LeBron and them, that was my favorite team as a kid. I didn’t like the Bulls because they were competitors. Then I got drafted by the Bulls and I had all these old tweets about Pau Gasol and D-Rose, and now these guys are my teammates. It was crazy.”
Portis and Rose were teammates for just one season, which was Portis’ rookie year. Rose would be traded to the Knicks meanwhile Portis would play for the Bulls until 2019 before being traded to the Washington Wizards. He had issues with the Bulls, which included him leaving a teammate bloody after a practice scuffle.
He played for the Knicks in 2019-20 and then signed with the Milwaukee Bucks, where he won an NBA title in his first season with the team. He also spoke to Redick about how he ended up joining the Bucks in 2020 free agency.
Can Bobby Portis Win Sixth Man Of The Year?
The race for Sixth Man of the Year hasn’t been as clear-cut this season as it was the past 2 years. A number of candidates are atop the list of choices that could go home with the award and Bobby Portis is definitely one of them.
He comes off the bench for Brook Lopez but can share the court with any frontcourt player the Bucks have due to his ability to stretch the floor. He is averaging 14.0 points, 9.7 rebounds, and 1.7 assists this season.
The award race is likely being led by Malcolm Brogdon or Tyrese Maxey, but Portis would be a breath of fresh air for the award. Montrezl Harrell and Bill Walton are the only two centers in league history to lift the award, and Portis definitely deserves to join them on that list. However, it seems his numbers just won’t be able to stack up to the likes of Brogdon or Maxey.
