Amid a bitter fight for control of the Minnesota Timberwolves, Alex Rodriguez wants to make his feelings clear on longtime franchise governor Glen Taylor. With the dispute still ongoing, Rodriguez has severed ties with Taylor and reportedly refused his attempts at reconciliation multiple times.
“On multiple occasions earlier in these playoffs, Taylor tried to approach Lore and Rodriguez to greet them either before or during games,” wrote The Athletic’s John Krawczynski. “Taylor even tried to hug Rodriguez at one point, only to be rebuffed, team sources said.”
Rodriguez and his business partner Marc Lore are still holding a grudge against Taylor for calling off the sale of the Timberwolves at the last minute. Taylor, who has owned the team since 1994, is showing no signs of cracking under threats of legal action.
“Lore and Rodriguez remain deeply angered by Taylor’s decision to call off their agreement,” wrote Krawczynski. “When Taylor made the initial announcement, Lore said it was “like a nuclear bomb” went off. He and Rodriguez have vowed to fight for the team for as long as it takes.”
The dispute began back in March of 2024. Months following an agreement from both sides to hand majority ownership to Rodriguez and Lore, Glen Taylor suddenly announced that he was pulling out without any prior warning. Rodriguez, a 3x American League MVP, immediately took the offensive and they’ve been waging war ever since.
During the height of the Timberwolves‘ run this year, both Rodriguez and Glen Taylor were seen in the crowd but they are far from being on good terms right now. I understand why Alex and his team are so offended by this development but it’s hard to see how they can force Taylor to sell if the purchase was not officially finalized. The only chance he’s got to regain control is through a personal meeting with Taylor that some hope can be scheduled for the near future.
Timberwolves Are Caught In The Middle Of An Ownership War
With emotions running hot and animosity building on both sides, there doesn’t appear to be an end in sight for this situation. While Taylor still maintains full control (for now), Rodriguez will challenge him with everything he’s got, taking a major toll on the entire organization. Just a few months of this ownership scandal is disrupting their entire operation.
“The uncertainty has put a strain on the entire Wolves operation… ‘We’re all caught in the middle,’ one Wolves employee said on condition of anonymity because employees are not authorized to speak publicly on the situation.”
Fresh off their best season since the Kevin Garnett era, this should be a summer of pride and optimism for the Timberwolves. But with so much uncertainty about who will be running the show, it’s impossible for things to run as smoothly as they could be.
If Taylor, 83, wanted to do the right thing, he’d honor his word and follow through on his agreement to sell the team. Given how much is at stake, if nothing else, it would be best for the entire organization right now.
But until one side gives in and finally rests its case, it will get ugly on the inside and things have already gotten personal at the top. For Anthony Edwards, a 2x All-Star, to avoid disaster he will have to maintain order in the locker room and avoid letting anything distract his team from its ultimate mission.
