Those are usually the key players of every team, who rise up when it really matters, especially in clutch moments in the regular season or during playoffs.

Without further ado, let’s delve into the list.

1. Sacramento Kings – Domantas Sabonis

Domantas Sabonis

Domantas Sabonis is the ultimate team player, even as a No. 3 option. Averaging 19.9 points, 13.1 rebounds, and 6.5 assists per game, Sabonis operates as a secondary playmaker for the Kings, providing a unique inside-out offensive dynamic. His ability to dominate the boards and facilitate makes him invaluable, even if he isn’t the focal point of the offense. His chemistry with De’Aaron Fox and DeMar DeRozan fuels Sacramento’s efficient, high-paced offense.

2. Cleveland Cavaliers – Evan Mobley

Evan Mobley

Evan Mobley stands out as one of the league’s most versatile No. 3 options. With his elite defensive ability, shot-blocking, and improved scoring touch this season, he averages 17.6 points, 8.9 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game. His role as a third option allows Darius Garland and Donovan Mitchell to operate with freedom while Mobley anchors the Cavaliers’ defense and contributes offensively when needed. His two-way impact on both ends makes him the league’s third-most well-rounded No. 3 option.

3. Oklahoma City Thunder – Jalen Williams

Oklahoma City Thunder star Jalen Williams (8) makes a play for his team at the Paycom Center.

Jalen Williams has emerged as one of the league’s most dynamic young players, solidifying himself as the Thunder’s third option. He’s averaging 21.8 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 5.2 assists per game in the 2024-25 season while shooting an impressive 51.7% from the field and 39.0% from three-point range. Williams excels in transition and has shown an ability to create his own shot, often stepping up when opposing defenses focus on Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Chet Holmgren.

4. Boston Celtics – Derrick White

Derrick White’s transition to the Celtics’ No. 3 role has been pivotal since last year’s championship victory. His defensive excellence and clutch shooting complement Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. White averages 18.4 points, 4.3 assists, and 1.2 blocks per game, often stepping up in big moments. While his scoring may not pop compared to others, his all-around game and basketball IQ are unmatched among No. 3 players.

5. Miami Heat – Tyler Herro

Tyler Herro

Despite starting the season as a potential lead option, Tyler Herro’s redefined role as the Heat’s third option fits his scoring prowess well. Averaging 23.8 points and 5.1 assists on 46.9% shooting, Herro’s ability to generate offense in isolation and off-ball situations makes him invaluable. The Heat rely on his creativity when Jimmy Butler or Bam Adebayo is out, showcasing his versatility.

6. Philadelphia 76ers – Paul George

Nov 18, 2024; Miami, Florida, USA; Philadelphia 76ers forward Paul George (8) dribbles the basketball against the Miami Heat during the first quarter at Kaseya Center.

Given his All-NBA resume, Paul George will always be surprising inclusion as a No. 3 option. Still, his current role behind Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey (despite only playing 8 games) reflects the 76ers’ situation more than anything else. George averages 14.9 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 4.8 assists this season, clearly well below expectations. While injuries have slowed him, George remains a valuable two-way presence for the Sixers and we cannot deny his pure impact when healthy.

7. Phoenix Suns – Bradley Beal

Bradley Beal

Bradley Beal’s adjustment to being a No. 3 option behind Kevin Durant and Devin Booker has been smooth. This season, Beal averages 17.8 points and 3.7 assists per game, showcasing his ability to play off the ball and as a secondary playmaker. Though his scoring has dipped from his prime years, his efficiency has improved, with shooting splits of 47.5% from the field and 38.3% from three. Beal’s scoring punch in clutch situations remains a valuable asset for the Phoenix Suns.

8. Portland Trail Blazers – Jerami Grant

Nov 8, 2024; Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA; Portland Trail Blazers forward Jerami Grant (9) works against Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards (5) in the third quarter at Target Center.

Jerami Grant continues to be a consistent scoring presence for the Trail Balzers, averaging 16.4 points and 3.5 rebounds per game. His ability to attack the rim, hit threes (35.7%), and guard multiple positions adds value to a young squad centered around Scoot Henderson. While not a traditional No. 3 due to Portland’s rebuilding state, Grant’s leadership and versatility provide a steadying influence for the team.

9. Denver Nuggets – Michael Porter Jr.

Michael Porter Jr.

Michael Porter Jr. thrives as the Nuggets’ third option, benefiting from the attention drawn by Nikola Jokić and Jamal Murray. MPJ contributes 18.6 points and 7.1 rebounds per game while shooting an elite 40.6% from three. His ability to stretch the floor, rebound, and make timely shots complements Denver’s star duo perfectly. While his defensive limitations remain, his offensive efficiency is unmatched for a No. 3 option.

10. Memphis Grizzlies – Desmond Bane

While Desmond Bane’s scoring may not always jump off the page (16.2 PPG), his impact on both ends makes him a crucial cog in the Grizzlies’ system. Bane’s sharpshooting and his underrated defensive presence give Memphis balance and perimeter spacing. His ability to seamlessly switch between off-ball scorer and secondary playmaker enhances his value to Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr.

11. Charlotte Hornets – Miles Bridges

Currently, the third option behind LaMelo Balla and Brandon Miller, Miles Bridges has quickly reestablished himself as a critical piece for the Hornets, averaging 16.0 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. His athleticism and ability to finish in transition add energy to Charlotte’s offense, while his defense remains underrated. If Bridges continues refining his three-point shot (34.8%), he could elevate even further among No. 3 players.

12. New York Knicks – Mikal Bridges

Nov 20, 2024; Phoenix, Arizona, USA; New York Knicks forward Mikal Bridges (25) against the Phoenix Suns at Footprint Center. Mandatory Credit: Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images

Mikal Bridges has become a vital piece for the Knicks as their third option. Averaging 15.8 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.1 steals per game, Bridges has provided stellar perimeter defense while stepping up offensively when needed. His ability to guard multiple positions and contribute offensively gives the Knicks a dynamic two-way presence despite the fact his numbers are down.

13. Houston Rockets – Fred VanVleet

Fred VanVleet brings stability and leadership as Houston’s No. 3 option. With 14.5 points, 6.1 assists, and 1.8 steals per game, VanVleet remains a steady hand in critical moments while mentoring a young Rockets roster. His championship pedigree and experience provide balance to a team full of promising yet raw talent. VanVleet’s role as a reliable two-way guard underscores Houston’s ongoing transformation.

14. Chicago Bulls – Coby White

Proposed Trade Sends Bulls Guard Coby White To The Celtics

Coby White has stepped up as a reliable third option for the Chicago Bulls, averaging 19.1 points, 4.8 assists, and 3.4 rebounds per game this season. His shooting efficiency has been notable, hitting 38.4% of his three-point attempts while playing a critical role in spacing the floor for Zach LaVine and Nikola Vucevic, the current primary scorers. White’s improvement as a playmaker has also been a pleasant surprise, as he’s consistently setting up teammates and reducing turnovers.

15. Indiana Pacers – Bennedict Mathurin

Bennedict Mathurin

Bennedict Mathurin continues to develop into a dynamic scorer for the Pacers, contributing 18.7 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. His slashing ability and knack for drawing fouls complement Tyrese Haliburton’s playmaking. Mathurin’s defensive consistency is still a work in progress, but his scoring potential makes him an exciting No. 3 option with room to grow.

16. New Orleans Pelicans – CJ McCollum

CJ McCollum Throws Shade At The Sacramento Kings After His 30-Point Performances

Even if he only has four appearances, CJ McCollum will be returning to the court soon and remains an elite shot-creator as New Orleans’ third option. Despite the Pelicans‘ awful 4-14 start to the season, McCollum posted 18.8 points and 4.0 assists while maintaining his trademark efficiency from mid-range and beyond the arc (38.2% 3PT). McCollum’s poise and experience give the Pelicans a reliable scoring option in crunch time, complementing Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram, if any of them can stay healthy.

17. Los Angeles Lakers – Austin Reaves

Austin Reaves Says Lakers Need To Move On From In-Season Tournament Win: "That's Over, We've Gotta Focus On The Season"

Austin Reaves continues to grow as a critical contributor for the Lakers. Averaging 17.4 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 5.3 assists, Reaves is efficient, shooting 44.4% from the field and 36.7% from three. His ability to play off LeBron James and Anthony Davis while creating his own offense makes him indispensable. Reaves’ knack for performing in clutch moments has cemented his reputation as a reliable and fearless player on a championship-aspiring team.

18. Utah Jazz – Collin Sexton

Collin Sexton’s role as Utah’s third option has highlighted his scoring instincts. Averaging 16.5 points and 3.1 assists per game, Sexton provides a spark off the bench with his aggressive drives and ability to hit mid-range shots. While his defense remains inconsistent, Sexton’s offensive contributions keep him as a key part of the Jazz rotation.

19. Orlando Magic – Jalen Suggs

Jalen Suggs

Jalen Suggs has blossomed into a reliable No. 3 option for the Magic, averaging 14.7 points, 3.6 assists, and 1.4 steals this season. His defensive intensity sets the tone for Orlando, while his improved three-point shooting (35.4%) opens up space for Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner. Suggs’ ability to play both guard spots gives the Magic versatility, making him a key cog in Banchero’s absence.

20. Detroit Pistons – Tobias Harris

Reacquired by the Pistons in the offseason, Tobias Harris is thriving as a veteran presence among Detroit’s young core. With averages of 13.9 points and 7.4 rebounds, Harris provides steady scoring and leadership on a rebuilding team. His efficiency (45.0% FG, 32.1% 3PT) and experience balance the Pistons’ youthful energy, though his production may not leap off the stat sheet compared to other No. 3 options.

21. Toronto Raptors – Gradey Dick

Gradey Dick And Anthony Black Exchanged Jerseys To Take A Double-Meaning Photo

As a second-year player, Gradey Dick is showing promise with 18.1 points and 3.1 rebounds while shooting 34.2% from beyond the arc. His ability to space the floor and hit timely shots complements Scottie Barnes and RJ Barrett. While his defense is still developing, Dick’s sharpshooting makes him a weapon the Raptors can rely on as he gains more experience.

22. Dallas Mavericks – Klay Thompson

Oct 24, 2024; Dallas, Texas, USA; Dallas Mavericks guard Klay Thompson (31) during the game between the Dallas Mavericks and the San Antonio Spurs at the American Airlines Center. Mandatory Credit: Jerome Miron-Imagn Images

Klay Thompson is not the same player who was a bonafide threat to make the All-Star Team and even the All-Defensive Team, but he is still capable of knocking down open jumpers which means he will always be a threat. Playing alongside Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, Thompson is averaging 13.2 points and 3.6 rebounds per game on 36.8% from three. In a game where everything matters, we expect Thompson to always be a factor and we can’t discount his legacy either.

23. Minnesota Timberwolves – Naz Reid

Naz Reid

Naz Reid is the reigning Sixth Man of the Year but his role as the third option hasn’t exactly boosted the Timberwolves as expected. Averaging 13.8 points and 5.1 rebounds in just 24.6 minutes per game, Reid thrives as a highly efficient stretch big. His ability to score inside, knock down threes, and defend multiple positions gives the Timberwolves tremendous flexibility. As Anthony Edwards and Julius Randle dominate the offense, Reid quietly proves he’s a cornerstone of Minnesota’s success.

24. Atlanta Hawks – De’Andre Hunter

Mar 5, 2024; New York, New York, USA; Atlanta Hawks forward De'Andre Hunter (12) shoots the ball during the first half against the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden.

De’Andre Hunter is a capable third option for Atlanta, contributing 17.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.2 steals per game. His consistent perimeter defense and improving offensive repertoire complement Trae Young and Jalen Johnson. Hunter’s ability to hit the three (36.4%) and guard multiple positions makes him a cornerstone in Atlanta’s lineup.

25. Milwaukee Bucks – Bobby Portis

Semi-Pro Basketball Player Destroys Bobby Portis In A 1-On-1 Game: "You Scared N***a!"

Bobby Portis thrives as Milwaukee’s energy player off the bench, averaging 13.1 points and 7.6 rebounds. His hustle, grit, and ability to hit timely shots are vital to the Bucks‘ success. Portis’ fiery personality and physical play make him a fan favorite and a spark plug, especially when Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard draw most of the attention Yes, Portis has become the Bucks’ third option ahead of Khris Middleton this season.

26. San Antonio Spurs – Jeremy Sochan

Jeremy Sochan

Jeremy Sochan’s versatility is his greatest strength, as he contributes 15.4 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game. Playing alongside Victor Wembanyama and Devin Vassell, Sochan handles the dirty work, providing defense, rebounding, and occasional playmaking. His offensive game is still raw, but his intangibles make him an intriguing No. 3 option.

27. Brooklyn Nets – Dennis Schroder

Video: Dennis Schroder Shoves Mike Conley For Shooting A Three At The End Of The Timberwolves-Nets Game

Dennis Schroder’s role in Brooklyn has made him a steady contributor, averaging 17.2 points and 6.5 assists per game. Known for his quickness and ability to control the tempo, Schroder fills the gaps offensively and helps create opportunities for Cam Thomas and Cam Johnson. While not the flashiest option, his veteran savvy and experience bring balance to a Nets team in transition.

28. Golden State Warriors – Buddy Hield

Nov 2, 2024; Houston, Texas, USA; Golden State Warriors guard Buddy Hield (7) leaves the court following the game against the Houston Rockets at Toyota Center.

Buddy Hield provides elite shooting as the Warriors’ No. 3 option, averaging 15.9 points while hitting 44.1% of his threes. His off-ball movement and ability to stretch defenses are a perfect match for Golden State’s system. Hield’s defensive limitations are well-documented, but his floor-spacing makes life easier for Stephen Curry and Andrew Wiggins, keeping the offense fluid and unpredictable.

29. Los Angeles Clippers – Ivica Zubac

Ivica Zubac

Ivica Zubac might not be a flashy scorer, but his importance to the Clippers is undeniable. Averaging 15.2 points, 12.5 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks per game, Zubac anchors the Clippers’ defense and provides a reliable presence in the paint. His improved offensive performance comes down to the fact that Kawhi Leonard has not played and Zubac is the third option behind James Harden and Norman Powell.

30. Washington Wizards – Bilal Coulibaly

Bilal Coulibaly

Bilal Coulibaly has shown flashes of brilliance as a rookie for the Wizards, averaging 14.3 points and 5.9 rebounds. His defensive instincts and energy give Washington hope for the future, even if his offense remains inconsistent. Coulibaly’s long-term potential outweighs his current production, but he’s already proving himself as a cornerstone of the rebuild.
