• Michael Jordan decided to buy seven cars for himself and his family as a rookie

• He ensured he took care of his family and paid back an old family friend

• Jordan has a deep interest in cars and even owns a NASCAR team

Michael Jordan is the most successful NBA player of all time, both on and off the court. The multi-billionaire came from humble beginnings but knew he was destined for the big time after he got drafted.

Don Godwin, the son of Jordan family friend, Lewis Godwin, shared a story of how his father sold seven cars to rookie Jordan in a car dealership in Wilmington, North Carolina.

“Michael said, ‘I want to buy seven cars. Do you see that big black Mercedes, the four-door? That’s the one for me. I want my mother to have the little Mercedes next to it, and I want my dad to have a Mercedes. I want my grandmother to have a big Pontiac Bonneville, and my brothers and sisters—Firebird Trans Ams, beautiful Pontiacs.'”

Jordan is a very loving family man and took care of everyone who believed in him. Today, he has a net worth of $3.5 billion and could buy all these cars a thousand times over. Safe to say he has provided generational wealth to the entire Jordan clan.

The Salesman Tried Talking Michael Jordan Out Of Buying The Cars

Don Godwin also revealed that Jordan was almost talked out of the sale by his father, who was looking out for the family’s larger financial interest. Godwin was worried Jordan would be another newly minted sports millionaire who would blow through his money. Jordan didn’t take offense to the notion but wanted to be loyal to the man who helped their family when they had nothing.

“My dad went back over to Michael and told him he hadn’t meant any disrespect. He’d just wanted to make sure the family was okay with everything and Michael said, ‘I understand, Mr. Lewis. But I want you to get a large sale. I’m going to pay the window sticker price because you were a really good friend to my mother and daddy. When nobody would loan them money to buy a car, you always made it happen.'”

It is abundantly clear that the Godwin family are good people given how his father was about to turn down a massive profit to protect Michael. Loyalty like that pays off and it surely did for the Godwin family that day.

Michael Jordan Loves Cars As Much As Winning

Michael Jordan’s car collection is incredibly impressive. The total value is in the millions with some incredible pieces of machinery sitting in his garage. He has multiple Chevrolet Corvettes such as the C5 and C4 ZR-1. Along with that, he has an incredible Chevy Cadillac as well. He also likes his more utility-based trucks such as a Land Rover and a Ford F-150 Raptor.

The grails in his collection come with the various Ferraris in his possession. This includes a 512TR, 599 GTB Fiorano, Pista, and 512 Maranello. His million-dollar cars include the Bugatti Veyron Sang Noir for $2 million and the Mercedes-McLaren SLR 722 Edition which costs a whopping $3 million.

Jordan also owns his own NASCAR team 23XL Racing. While his winning habits haven’t fully transferred over to the racing team, it’s clear he’ll be focusing on improving their state after selling the Charlotte Hornets this summer.
