After another nightmarish season with the Lakers, Russell Westbrook was finally traded this month in a blockbuster deal that sent him to the Utah Jazz.

While Russ isn’t expected to remain with the Jazz, the NBA future is still very much up in the air and he has yet to decide which team he will join when the season resumes next week.

According to the latest report from Marc Stein, Westbrook is still considering his options and will use the All-Star break this year to take a break from the chaos and prepare for his next step.

“Former MVP Russell Westbrook, widely seen as the most prominent player conceivably available on this season’s NBA buyout market, is expected to use the All-Star break to recharge before proceeding with his next career steps, league sources say. Westbrook, while reserving the right to speed up that timetable if the right opportunity arises, has expressed a desire to be deliberate in his decision-making…”

Westbrook has been handed off to several teams over the past few years, and each stop got progressively worse for the former MVP. This season, things did get better after Westbrook finally accepted a permanent bench role, but he remained the scapegoat for the Lakers until the hour he was traded.

Where Will Westbrook Play Next?

Despite his struggles as a Lakers, Russell Westbrook has a number of teams pursuing his services and he remains the best buyout candidate available right now.

According to reports across the league, the Bulls, Clippers, Heat, and Wizards are all making a run for the veteran guard.

The question is, how would he fit on any of those teams? As a poor shooter who is already 34 years old, Russ isn’t going to be the featured piece of any offense. But in the right scene, with the right teammates, he could bring valuable minutes to the rotation.

Over these next few days, Russ has to think hard about where he will sign. Considering his poor play and damaged reputation, this could be his last chance to land one final stint with a contending team before his career is over.

It will be interesting to see where he ends up, and what kind of success he will have outside now that he’s freed from the Purple and Gold.
