Bronny James is now teammates with his father LeBron James, after the Los Angeles Lakers selected him with the 55th pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. While that was a special moment, it also led to a joke going viral on social media, that LeBron was sleeping with his new teammate’s mom. Savannah James, who is LeBron’s wife and Bronny’s mother, found that to be hilarious, and she reacted to the joke on Instagram.

This is the first time in NBA history, that it has been termed acceptable for a player to sleep with their teammate’s mother. It would, in fact, be somewhat problematic if they weren’t sleeping together.

Savannah, 37, and LeBron, 39, are high school sweethearts who got married on Sept. 14, 2013. They have three children together, Bronny, Bryce, and Zhuri, and are a very happy family.

Savannah would have had dreams of things being this great when they started dating in the early 2000s, but I’d think not even in her wildest dreams would she have thought that her husband and eldest son would one day be teammates in the NBA. A father-son duo had never been on the same team prior to this in the league.

Now, LeBron could potentially leave the Lakers in free agency, but following the events on Thursday, I would say the chances of that happening are slim. Father and son will be on the court together at some point in the future and there would probably be no one more proud at that moment than Savannah.

After Bronny was drafted, she shared a picture of him as a kid being carried by LeBron and emotionally reacted to it.

Imagine telling someone at that time that these two individuals would be teammates one day. What makes this even more emotional, is what Bronny had to go through to get here. It was just under a year ago on July 24, 2023, that the teenager suffered a cardiac arrest during a practice session at USC.

Bronny’s life would have flashed before his eyes at that moment and I can’t even begin to imagine what would have been going through Savannah’s mind when she heard the news. To go from that to seeing her son being drafted would have felt incredible.

Adrian Wojnarowski Came To Bronny James’ Defense

While Bronny now potentially getting to play with LeBron is quite special, there is no denying that nepotism was in play here. Would the Lakers have drafted the 19-year-old, who averaged 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 0.8 steals, and 0.2 blocks per game as a freshman for USC, if he wasn’t the son of their superstar forward? Probably not. That has led to some criticism and Adrian Wojnarowski defended Bronny from the nepotism claims.

“I don’t want to hear these charges—people talking about nepotism. The NBA is full of nepotism: the ownership level, front offices, coaching. I don’t want to hear it all of a sudden because Bronny James’ father plays for the Lakers. It is rampant in this league.”

Nepotism exists everywhere and the NBA is really no different. It is more prevalent at the executive level, but there are examples of it being in play when it comes to players as well. Thanasis Antetokounmpo is a great example of that, as he is only on the Milwaukee Bucks because of his brother Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Thanasis has been ridiculed a lot on social media for it, though, and the same is going to happen to Bronny as well. I hope he has some thick skin.
