- ESPN analyst admits he went too far with criticism of Kwame Brown
- Smith says he didn’t know the short clip would go viral after over 10 years
- Stephen A. says Hall of Famers called him after a back-and-forth with Kwame
Sitting down for a one-on-one with Clippers guard Paul George, famed sports analyst Stephen A. Smith revealed the one thing in his career that he’d do over again if given the chance. Surprisingly, instead of picking some missing opportunity with a boss, Smith picked the time when he roasted Kwame Brown on national television.
“Kwame Brown, I wish I could do that over. I wouldn’t do it. I know what I said, I did mean it,” said Stephen A. “I ain’t gonna sit here and tell you I ain’t mean the sh*t I said. But I didn’t know it was gonna be like this… remember, I said it before Twitter. I didn’t know that 15 years later they were gonna have memes and videos.”
The video being referenced here went viral several years ago, and it features Stephen A. obliterating Kwame Brown in the aftermath of his trade from the Lakers.

That was a pretty harsh critique, even for Stephen A. And now, looking back on it, he admits he probably went too far.
“When I see what he says, I realize how hurt he is. It was a sound bite, they had just traded for Pau Gasol… they asked me this question and I was just like, ‘What?!’ One time I had to address it cause I felt like he was coming after me like I was scared. I can’t even tell you that when I did that, the stars, and practically all of them were Hall-of-Famers, and they’re like, ‘Nahhh.’ As I see the clips now and some of the stuff that he says, I just be like ‘go ahead bro.'”

Kwame Has It Out For Stephen A.
It’s no secret that Kwame is still a little salty over Stephen A.’s criticism. Over the years, he’s said a lot of nasty stuff about the ESPN broadcaster, and even challenged him to ‘mutual combat.’
“I don’t know why you got people thinking you’re tough saying all kinds of shit saying you can come see me, meet me in Seattle where we can have mutual combat and talk like that, it’s going to look like you got a toupee in the front of your head by how hard I’d slap you,” said Brown on Smith in a 2021 video.
Needless to say, Stephen A. has burned that bridge with Kwame Brown, and it’s likely not the only relationship he’s destroyed after years in the journalism industry. Despite it all, Stephen A. is always going to call it as he sees it…
