Point guard Scoot Henderson is one of the highly-anticipated prospects from the 2023 NBA Draft, with Henderson going No. 3 to the Portland Trail Blazers. Many believe that he has the right combination of athleticism, playmaking, and defense to be a successful point guard in the NBA. It seems as though Stephen A. Smith is particularly high on him.
Recently, the NBA analyst stated his belief that Henderson will win the Rookie of the Year award over players like Victor Wembanyama and Chet Holmgren.
“That brother Scoot Henderson in Portland, third overall pick, he got sisters. And I met ’em. First of all, they can ball. And secondly, they get in his face and they will get in his face long before anybody else will,” Smith said. “When you got relatives that’s in your face and you know they have an impact on you, they affect your motor… I’m looking at Scoot Henderson to win Rookie of the Year.”

There is no doubt that Henderson has the right mindset, and he is a very active player on both ends of the floor. He will always play with a high amount of energy, and use his athleticism effectively as a two-way player.
During his last season with the G-League Ignite, Henderson averaged 16.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 6.8 assists per game. It will be interesting to see how Henderson’s play will translate to the NBA, and he will certainly have a lot of opportunities to show his talent with the Trail Blazers.
Scoot Henderson Is Ready To Lead The Portland Trail Blazers In The Post-Damian Lillard Era
Now that Damian Lillard has been traded to the Milwaukee Bucks, the Trail Blazers are now Henderson’s team. He will have to be the leader of the franchise and become a superstar for them to return to the playoffs and eventually compete for a championship. Previously, we saw Henderson get real on leading the Trail Blazers in the post-Damian Lillard era.
“I’m going to just embrace that. I’m going to embrace being the point guard for the team. And that comes with practice. I don’t have my spot guaranteed; I know that. My goal is to get better every day at practice and get better game by game.”
It is clear that Henderson is ready for the responsibility that comes with being the face of a team. Hopefully, he will be able to succeed on the Trail Blazers, and we’ll see how he develops going forward.
The Portland Trail Blazers Are Engaged In A Full-On Rebuild
There is no doubt that the Trail Blazers got a huge haul for trading Damian Lillard. They got four players and three picks in totality for Lillard, with center Deandre Ayton in particular having the potential to become a franchise centerpiece.
The team also has a ready-made young backcourt, with Henderson likely starting at the PG position, and Shaedon Sharpe playing the SG position. Sharpe has a high ceiling due to his shot-creation ability and bionic athleticism.
As of right now, it is fair to say that the Trail Blazers have the talent to be one of the best teams of the future. The key will be their young players developing well, and helping them improve will be a priority for the team next season.
