Just when Kawhi Leonard was looking his best, the Clippers announced he’d miss Game 3 due to a mysterious knee injury that seemingly appeared out of nowhere.

While Kawhi typically doesn’t miss playoff games, his history of load management and poor attendance throughout the regular season has some people questioning his reliability as a superstar. Speaking on his podcast, Stephen A. Smith went so far as to suggest Kawhi should retire if he continues to miss games with discretion.

“I just have to say it, I’m sick of Kawhi Leonard. Seriously, why don’t you just retire? I mean, the dude blackmails the Clippers into moving heaven and earth to get Paul George because he was threatening to go to the Lakers. This brother has missed so many damn games it don’t make any sense. He’s missed more than 50% of his games. I think him and Paul George have played a grand total of three playoff games together. I mean, you just can’t make this up. 22% of their games together, altogether….”

We all know what Kawhi can do on the court. As one of the best two-way players in the league, he’s capable of playing lock-down defense and dropping 40 on any given night. Sadly, Kawhi can’t be counted on to be there in the big moments and he’s always finding some excuse to miss important games for the Clippers.

This season may have been one of his worst offenses, as he bailed on a team that could have taken control of the series.

The Championship Window Is Closing For The Clippers

No matter where this ends for Los Angeles this year, one has to imagine that chances are coming for this version of the team. After repeated years of playoff failures, the only way for this franchise to get right might be by taking a risk and making a big move.

But there’s only so far the Clippers can go if Kawhi isn’t consistently on the court and the team will need to figure out how to make that happen if they want any hope of salvaging what’s left of this star-studded era.
