LeBron James, throughout his career, has been considered a hyper-athletic player, and he is known for throwing down some ferocious dunks in-game. However, he has never participated in the Slam Dunk Contest, which is unfortunate since he likely would have been able to win it in his prime.

It is clear that the NBA’s dunk contest has not been the same for the last few years, and fans generally tune in more to the 3PT contest and the All-Star game. Part of the reason the dunk contest has not been popular is due to the lack of stars that participate. Recently, Stephen A. Smith blamed LeBron James for ruining the dunk contest, pointing out that it is his refusal to participate was an example for others to do the same.

LeBron James has ruined the Slam Dunk contest. He is personally responsible… He prides himself as a motivator, he prides himself as a pioneer in a lot of respects. That dude is the standard-bearer and the standard-setter. When it came to the Slam Dunk Contest he refused to participate… Let’s understand that when we think about the absence of the stars participating in the Slam Dunk Contest, LeBron James is the one responsible for all of that.

There is no doubt that it is unfortunate that we don’t see more stars in the dunk contest. Though that phenomenon definitely isn’t solely on LeBron James, it is unfortunate that we haven’t seen the league’s marquee star participate in one of the historically great All-Star contests. Hopefully, we see that change in the future, and there are a number of league stars that could put on a show in the dunk contest.

Many Believe Mac McClung Saved The Dunk Contest

There is no doubt that this year’s dunk contest was one of the best in years due to the dunks being performed, and a large reason for it becoming an amazing sight again is due to Mac McClung’s participation. Many fans were in awe of his dunk over two people, and hopefully, we see the sensational dunker participate in the contest once again next season.

Of course, the dunk contest would be much better if we saw top-tier stars participate. Zion Williamson has already stated that he could participate in the 2024 Dunk Contest, and perhaps that will set the competition back in the right direction. A lot of fans simply want to see stars participate in an iconic part of All-Star weekend, and we’ll see what ends up happening in the future.
