Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson might be the greatest guard pairing in NBA history with the accolades they’ve racked up. But their interests go beyond the game of basketball. During the offseason, their love shifts all the way to the sport of golf.
Curry and Thompson were on the ‘Through The Wire’ podcast and answered some quick hitters on which NBA player would win in a round of golf, starting with a battle of the heavyweights. Michael Jordan vs. Charles Barkley.
Stephen Curry: “That’s gotta be Mike.”
Klay Thompson: “I can spot Charles 20 strokes and even then.”
The backcourt was then asked to pick between their frontcourt teammates, Draymond Green and Andrew Wiggins.
Klay Thompson: “I’ve seen Draymond, he’s gotten better. He’s putting the ball in the fairway these days.”
Stephen Curry: “I would say Draymond too. Last summer, he sent me a video on the course and I almost dropped my phone like, ‘Yo, what?'”
The host, Kenny Beacham, then asked Steph to pick between himself and J.R. Smith, who recently played amateur golf in the NCAA. Smith has previously said he’d beat Curry in a round of golf.
Stephen Curry: “I’m extremely confident on that one. JR got game. I played three years of high school golf, so I’m one of those dudes that has had a little bit of competitive experience back in the day. Straight up, me and JR, I got that one.”
Golf is incredibly competitive, especially between NBA players that often use the sport to take a break from the hardwood of the basketball court. Curry, in particular, is a very proficient golfer. He has previously said it’s the toughest sport to master. Maybe we see a post-retirement Curry hone in on his love for this game and start perfecting it.
A New Day In Golden State
The Golden State Warriors do not look like the championship squad of 2022 anymore, making a big offseason trade and sending Jordan Poole to the Washington Wizards for Chris Paul. With Paul expected to bring stability and maturity to the Warriors’ locker room, Curry can hopefully resume solely focusing on winning games on the court.
Draymond Green’s free agency is a matter the team needs to resolve quickly, though most people expect him to stay with the franchise. Unless the Sacramento Kings can somehow throw a massive offer at Green, he’s likely coming back to Golden State on a deal that will satisfy both player and team.
The championship window seems to be fast closing, and the team has taken an even bigger step by acquiring the expiring contract of a 38-year-old. If they can’t return to winning ways next season, the team will need to reevaluate if they can still compete for titles with this core group.
