Stephen Curry’s legacy as the greatest shooter of all time will be solidified very soon. Curry is on track to break Ray Allen’s record for the most three-pointers made in NBA history, now just 10 three-pointers away from setting the new record. But the numbers behind this run truly put his shooting prowess into perspective.
As pointed out by Bleacher Report before the Warriors-Blazers game, Stephen Curry has made 2964 three-pointers during his career. Ray Allen, on the other hand, has made 2973 three-pointers. But the amount of games they’ve taken to reach these numbers is very different. Curry has been more proficient from three than Ray Allen.
Ray Allen took 1300 games to make 2973 three-pointers in his career, averaging 2.28 three-pointers per game. Whereas Stephen Curry took just 786 games to make 2964 three-pointers, averaging 3.77 three-pointers per game. Curry will break Ray Allen’s record in just a little over half the games that Ray Allen took to set this record.
Curry has spoken about this record in the lead-up to him breaking it. Recently, he joked ahead of the Warriors’ game against the Trail Blazers that he would have liked to break both Allen’s record and Klay Thompson’s record for most three-pointers made in a game with 14.
Steph Curry has been spectacular this season and is a leading candidate for the MVP trophy this season. If he does win, he will become a 3-time MVP, joining legends like LeBron James, Michael Jordan, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar who have won 3 or more MVPs in their career.
Curry could make a lot of history this season. It is shaping up to be a memorable season for Curry, given the records at play. And if he can break Allen’s record, and even possibly Klay Thompson’s record, it will be a season to remember for Stephen Curry.
