In the wake of an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, both Stephen Curry and Steve Kerr of Team USA have expressed their profound sadness and concern over the incident. During a Team USA practice session in Abu Dhabi, Curry and Kerr shared their reactions to the news, emphasizing the broader issues of political divisiveness and gun violence in the United States.
Stephen Curry described his initial reaction to the news, saying:
“Pretty much like everybody else, I woke up and looked at my phone and got a couple text messages. It’s obviously a very sad time in general, all the conversations around the election and the state of politics in our country.”
“And then you have a situation like this, which invokes a lot of emotions around things that we need to correct as a people like obviously gun control first and foremost because the fact that that’s even possible for somebody to kind of you know have an attack like that but just more so you just you want to positivity and hope like that sounds cheesy but it’s real like that’s when our country’s at its best and it just adds another blemish to what’s going on.”
“So sad is just a word I can come up with.”
Steve Kerr, who has been an outspoken advocate against gun violence, shared his sentiments upon hearing the news from his family group chat.
“I found out on a family group text. My family was all talking about it. So 5:30 in the morning, I’m like, wait, what? So that’s how I found out. Of course, immediately went to different news sites to find out what happened.”
“And just a terrible, sad spectacle, two people dying. It’s such a demoralizing day for our country. It’s hard to process everything and it’s scary to think about where this goes because of the issues that already exist in the country. So this is a terrible day.”

Team USA’s presence in Abu Dhabi, training for the upcoming Paris Olympics, has added weight as they represent their country abroad. Kerr and Curry emphasized the importance of using this platform to showcase the best of American values, hoping to inspire positivity and unity back home.
Kerr echoed these sentiments, underscoring the team’s commitment to representing their country with dignity and respect amidst the ongoing turmoil.
The presence of U.S. Ambassador to the UAE Martina A. Strong and several marines at their practice session further reinforced the team’s connection to their home country during this challenging time.
