Starting from the 2014-15 season, the Golden State Warriors have won 4 championships in 8 seasons and made themselves a dynasty. But in the modern era before that, the Warriors haven’t enjoyed that kind of success. One of the best-remembered teams they had was the ‘We Believe’ roster in the 2006-07 season.

The Golden State Warriors in 2006-07 executed an incredible upset when they knocked out the No. 1 seed Dallas Mavericks as the 8th seed. No one expected them to do it, but with players like Baron Davis, Stephen Jackson, Jason Richardson, and Matt Barnes, they pulled it off. And Jackson recently shared the story of how it all clicked for that team.

“We start off shady because we didn’t have no camaraderie,” Jackson said. “Imma tell you when the team clicked. We all met up in my crib and smoked. Over after that. After practice, we all met at my crib. We was like, ‘Man, how we gonna turn this sh*t around?’ Me, BD (Baron Davis), Matt [Barnes], J-Rich (Jason Richardson), Monta [Ellis], Al [Harrington].”

Under the guidance of Head Coach Don Nelson, the Golden State Warriors finished 42-40 and clinched the 8th seed in the 2006-07 season. They went on and then beat Dirk Nowitzki’s Dallas Mavericks, the event that has made the team so famous. They lost the next series against the Utah Jazz, but that was enough to create their legend.

Who Were The ‘We Believe’ Warriors?

A team of players that weren’t considered to be more than excellent role players, the 2006-07 roster only had one star-caliber player in Baron Davis. He led them in points and assists, averaging 20.1 points per game and 8.1 assists. He had 4 players capable of putting up consistent performances to support him, Stephen Jackson, Al Harrington, Monta Ellis, and Jason Richardson all averaged more than 16 points per game that season.

The Warriors went on a 16-5 run to end their season and end a 13-year playoff drought for the franchise that year. The fact that they also then beat the Mavericks is still a little hard to believe even after all these years. None of their players would go on to become stars, and the Warriors wouldn’t even make it back to the playoffs after 2013, but the ‘We Believe’ Warriors will always be remembered fondly by those who watched them play.
