Steve Kerr On 2013: ‘Too Many Teams Just Launching 3’s From Everywhere. I Think That’s Bad For The Game.’

Steve Kerr is one of the greatest three-point shooters in the history of basketball. In fact, he holds the record for the highest three-point percentage in NBA history at 45.4%.

Given his resume and how he’s coached the Golden State Warriors, you could bet every single penny you have on Kerr being a huge enthusiast of a three-point-happy offense. However, it seems like that may not be the case at all.

In fact, recently-republished footage of an interview of Kerr in 2013 showed his concern for the way the game was being played at the time. He went on record on NBA TV to say that the league was lacking low-post men, and that all those teams taking that many threes weren’t good for the game:

“The NBA is missing low-post men. It’s so different from when everybody else kind of came into the league. The NBA was dominated by big men and now there’s hardly any of them and too many teams just launching 3’s from everywhere. I think that’s bad for the game,” Kerr said.

Kerr ended up taking the reins of the Golden State Warriors just over six months later and the rest, as you know, is history.

The Dubs made a living out of the three. They broke every single kind of individual and team records from beyond the arc, and that formula led them to 5 straight trips to the NBA Finals and 3 Championships.

Ironically, the very same complaint Kerr did about modern basketball has been said about his almighty Warriors over and over since he got the job in 2014.

Still, you have to work with the hand you’ve been dealt, so if you have arguably the two greatest three-point shooters to ever live as your starting backcourt, you’re going to give them the green light to make it rain.
