- Steven Adams was a lottery pick in the 2013 NBA Draft, being selected by Oklahoma City Thunder
- Despite having played 10 seasons in the NBA, Adams said he never expected to make it to the league
- Steven Adams hilariously told JJ Redick that he only put his name in the NBA Draft ‘for the ride’
Steven Adams is 30 years old and entering his 11th season in the NBA as a part of the Memphis Grizzlies. While he has never been more than a role player, Adams has carved out a successful career for himself. But the hilarious part about it, which he revealed to JJ Redick recently, is that he never even thought he would be here.
“I didn’t have NBA dreams or anything like that,” Adams said on The Old Man And The Three podcast. “I was just playing basketball and some dude offered me a scholarship, ol’ Jamie Dixon, and I thought, ‘Oh sweet, this will be great.’ Yeah, so I rocked over there and for me, that was like the hype, the peak of the hype like college, this is it.
“Threw my name in the NBA Draft, averaged six (points) and six (rebounds), and went No. 12, bro. It was cool… Oh, bro, I was just there for the ride. I didn’t even know I was gonna get drafted. I had no expectations of even making the NBA, to be honest. I just threw my name in there and whatever workouts I could get, I took… I was just having a blast, bro.”
Steven Adams gotta be the most casual lottery pick all time…

— Steven Adams Stats (@funakistats) August 19, 2023
Steven Adams is undisputedly one of the most likable and humble players in the league, and this quote proves it. He has 9.2 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 1.0 blocks per game for his NBA career, and it’s wild to know that only happened because he just decided to enter the draft on a whim.
He was drafted 12th overall by the Oklahoma City Thunder, which is crazy considering his college stats weren’t anything special. As they say though, all’s well that ends well. The New Zealander has one of the most unique NBA stories of all time, to be sure.
Steven Adams Is Too Good At Keeping It Real
Apart from famously setting the hardest screens in the NBA, Steven Adams also has a reputation for keeping it real when he talks about anything. A perfect example was when he was asked about his offensive rebounding prowess, and he described it as simply going and getting the ball because the team sucks at shooting.
He keeps it real with the fans too, like the team he reminded a young kid about his manners when he was asked for his autograph. He has a lot of character and is dependable on and off the court, which makes it likely that he will have a roster spot for at least another six or seven years unless he decides he wants to do something else.
