In an interesting case, the Boston Celtics earned more first-round picks for Marcus Smart than the Washington Wizards received from their Bradley Beal and Kristaps Porzingis trades, making them winners of the blockbuster move.
Sports Illustrated’s Rohan Nadkarni pointed out the fact soon after the Porzingis trade went down, marking it as the second mammoth trade news after Beal’s move to the Phoenix Suns earlier this week.
celtics got more firsts back for smart than the wizards did for beal & porzingis combined lol

On that note, here’s a look at the trade details for Marcus Smart:
Celtics Receive: Kristaps Porzingis, No. 23 pick in 2023 Draft, 2023 first-round pick, 2024 first-round pick
Memphis Receive: Marcus Smart
Wizards Receive: Tyus Jones (via Grizzlies), Danilo Gallinari (via Celtics), Mike Muscala (via Celtics), No. 25 pick in 2023 Draft (via Celtics)
And now, here’s what Washingon got from the Bradley Beal trade:
Suns receive: Bradley Beal, Jordan Goodwin, Isaiah Todd
Wizards receive Chris Paul, Landry Shamet, 2024 and 2026 pick swaps, six second-round picks
While the Celtics ended up with three picks, (The No. 23 pick, the 2023 first-round pick, and the 2024 first-round pick), the Wizards ended with just the No. 25 pick in the 2023 Draft (via Celtics).
This comes the actual loss for the Wizards, as they have clearly missed out on draft capital. They had reported offers for two first-round picks from the Miami Heat and one first-round pick from the Milwaukee Bucks, but instead, they have a No. 25 pick, two swaps, and six second-rounders.
Quite simply, in their attempt to blow up their roster, the Wizards have had bad trades going down in the last week. In their last two moves, they have lost two franchise faces in Beal and Porzingis, while Kyle Kuzma declined his player option. Clearly, the Suns and the Celtics have emerged as winners in their trades.
The Celtics Look Like A Formidable Threat Next Season
The Celtics have been trending in the right direction. While Jaylen Brown’s extension is one of the question marks, there have been reports that he will indeed stay in Boston, marking a new big four alongside Jayson Tatum, Robert Williams III, and Kristaps Porzingis.
The team has prided itself on being a stellar defensive unit, and should health not be a concern, Boston looks like a serious contender to stake a claim for the title.
The last two seasons have seen the Celtics make the playoffs. This year, they made an admirable comeback in the Eastern Conference Finals after being down 0-3 to even the series against the Miami Heat, they fell Game 7.
With a new big four, and a dynamic coach in Joe Mazzulla, Boston has the artillery to go the distance. It remains to be seen if they can.
