One of the biggest concerns surrounding the Phoenix Suns after they traded for Bradley Beal, was their depth. Beal’s massive contract meant they weren’t really in a great position to build a solid supporting cast around their stars, but they have done a surprisingly good job of it so far.

The latest addition was Eric Gordon and he is now the ninth player on their roster, to have shot above 35.0% from beyond the arc last season.

“Phoenix now has NINE players who shot over 35% from three last season:

Damion Lee 44.5%

Yuta Watanabe 44.4%

Kevin Durant 40.4%

Keita Bates-Diop 39.4%

Drew Eubanks 38.9%

Eric Gordon 37.1%

Cameron Payne 36.8%

Bradley Beal 36.5%

Devin Booker 35.1%

They added four of them over the last three days alone… the Suns are COOKING”

You can never have enough shooting in today’s NBA and the Suns are certainly trying to make sure they have a lot of it.  Phoenix struggled from beyond the arc in the series against the Denver Nuggets, as they shot just 33.1%, and while it wasn’t the only reason they lost, it certainly played a part.

The hope would be that a repeat doesn’t happen, with all these shooters now on the team. These role players will get a lot of open looks next season, as defenses will be trying to contain Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal, and if they can consistently hit those threes, then Phoenix will be a force to be reckoned with.

Should The Suns Now Be Favorites In The West?

On paper, the Suns do look great with all that firepower, and some would certainly have them as the favorites in the West at this point. There are still some issues surrounding this team, though, and the biggest one is that they don’t seem all that great defensively.

Keita Bates-Diop is probably the best defender they acquired this offseason, and Drew Eubanks is another solid one, but you do feel they’ll have issues on that end of the floor.

We have seen over the years that, ultimately, you need to be a good defensive team to win titles, and the Suns don’t look like one at the moment. Perhaps Frank Vogel can figure out a way to make it work, as he is one of the better defensive coaches in the NBA, and if he does, then they’d be the favorites.
