Getting to the NBA isn’t easy by any means. You need to be extremely talented to make it in and stay there, even as a bench warmer.

There are some though, who Hall of Famer Tracy McGrady believes are in the league today solely based on relationships.

“There’s guys in the NBA (that) should be thanking god every day,” McGrady said. “That they’re lucky to be in that position because some of these guys are there just based off of relationships.”

This is really the case in most walks of life, as having positive relationships with the right people does help some get into positions that they might not be completely qualified for. It is doubtful that McGrady was referring to anyone in particular here but a few names do come to mind.

There would be many who would point to Thanasis Antetokounmpo being on the Milwaukee Bucks purely because of his brother Giannis Antetokounmpo. It was also talked about forever that Austin Rivers was in the NBA solely because of his father Doc Rivers, especially when Austin played for Doc on the Los Angeles Clippers. To his credit, Rivers managed to shake off that label and has gone on to have a solid NBA career. Thanasis could do the same, but until then, it’ll always be said that he is in the league only because of his brother.

Tracy McGrady’s NBA Career

McGrady certainly made his mark in the NBA and he could have done so much more if not for injuries. In 15 seasons, primarily with the Orlando Magic and Houston Rockets, he averaged 19.6 PPG, 5.6 RPG, and 4.4 APG. He was a seven-time All-Star and won back-to-back scoring titles in 2003 and 2004.

While postseason success would elude McGrady as he never made it out of the first round, he earned a lot of respect from his peers as well as those who came after him. Kobe Bryant once named him the toughest guy he ever played against, while Kevin Durant said McGrady inspired his game.
