• Tyronn Lue got to play with and coach some of the greatest players in league history
• Lue was teammates with Michael Jordan on the Wizards, Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal on the Lakers, and coached LeBron James on the Cavaliers
• Lue has won three championships in his career as a result of his star teammates
A role-player in the NBA isn’t glamorized, but it arguably makes or breaks teams that want to win titles. Tyronn Lue was a role-player but became a multi-time champion by having some of the best NBA superstars around him.
Lue played alongside Michael Jordan in the twilight of his career on the Wizards. Prior to that, he was playing for the Lakers for two of their three title-winning years led by Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal.
After finishing his career and becoming a coach, Lue became NBA champion once again while coaching LeBron James‘ Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016.
Ty Lue averaged 4.1 points, 0.8 rebounds, and 1.4 assists over the three years with Shaq and Kobe from the 1998-99 season to 2000-01.
He averaged 8.2 points, 1.9 rebounds, and 3.5 assists in two seasons while teammates with Jordan in 2001-02 and 2002-03.
He didn’t have to get on the court with LeBron but had a 110-75 regular season record while head coach of the Cavs from 2016 to 2018. He made three Finals (four including 2015 as an assistant coach), winning one title in 2016.
Tyronn Lue Knows What It Takes To Win
Tyronn Lue has shared locker rooms with some of the biggest winners in NBA history. Being drafted into the NBA as a member of the Lakers just as they established themselves as a dominant force in the NBA had to have inculcated winning habits in him in his early years.
Following that up with sharing a locker room with MJ after his title-winning prime, the lessons he would’ve learned would be invaluable. Outside of these three, Lue was also teammates with Hall of Famers like Dirk Nowitzki and Tracy McGrady.
The Cavs’ 2016 title win is the biggest accomplishment of his career, as he is the only head coach that can say his team overcame a 3-1 Finals deficit and took down the greatest regular season team of all time. His time with LeBron as a rookie coach ultimately set the table for the success he’s had as a coach since.
