Trae Young is one of the best point guards in the league, and there is no doubt that he’s been having a stellar season. However, the guard has frequently dealt with criticism from analysts and fans this season, and he might get even more after this latest incident.

In the recent game between the Atlanta Hawks and the Indiana Pacers, Trae Young was ejected after the threw the ball at a referee. It was his second technical foul, and it is clear that the ejection was fair.

Though there are times when technical fouls seem unwarranted, it is clear that this was not one of those times. Trae Young deserved to be ejected after this, and hopefully, the Atlanta Hawks will manage to win without him.

As of right now, Trae Young is averaging 26.8 PPG, 3.1 RPG, and 10.0 APG. Hopefully, we see him avoid incidents such as this going forward, as the Atlanta Hawks can’t afford to have him thrown out from games due to frustrations with the referees.

Trae Young Has Criticized The Referees In The Past

We have seen a number of players criticize NBA officials this season, and Trae Young was one of them. Previously, Trae Young claimed that the referees should also face fines, suspensions, and other penalties just like the players.

“We don’t care now. We move!” Young stated. “This goes back to my statement I said at the beginning of the year, refs should be held more accountable ($, suspensions, etc.) just like us. They shouldn’t get ‘We missed it’ passes.”

This wave of criticism towards the referees was started by Fred VanVleet’s viral rant toward referee Ben Taylor. The point guard willingly took the fine from the league to get some things off his chest.

“I’ll take a fine. I don’t really care. I thought Ben Taylor was f**king terrible today. On most nights, out of the 3, there’s 1 or 2 that just f**k the game up. it’s been like that a couple of games in a row.”

“Especially after the night we just had in Denver, the way that finished, so there were a couple of calls earlier that we all disagreed with. And if I say to my team, ‘Come on, guys, let’s keep playing [through] the bull****’ and that warrants a tech, I think that’s a little bit crazy. Like, what are we doing? Know what I mean?”

There is no doubt that there needs to be a concerted effort from referees to try and get every call right. Technicals are typically at the referees’ discretion, and thus it is easy to see why they can be perceived as biased.

Hopefully, we see some improvement from the referees regarding the inconsistencies in the calls that players get going forward. At the end of the day though, the goal should be to win by any means necessary, even through some bad calls.
