Zach Lowe had an interesting reveal about how much money players on the winning and losing sides make during the All-Star Game.
The 2023 All-Star game was a damp squib and was the least-watched affair in league history. This year, the event saw some marquee names on the injury list, namely sharpshooter Stephen Curry and forward Kevin Durant. The NBA insider and analyst had his take on the All-Star event on his ‘The Lowe Post Podcast’ while also making some interesting comments on the money that was involved.
[Starts 8:41 onwards]
“Everyone on the winning team right now gets $100,000. Everyone on the losing team gets $25,000 bucks. That’s obviously not enough to make the players care. It’s something if not nothing, but it’s not enough to make them care.
The basic premise was all about incentivization so that players would suit up to play for the following year. This holds good even for the Slam-Dunk contest. Per ClutchPoints, the winner rakes in $100,000, while the second and third-place finishers will make $50,000 and $20,000, respectively.
Zach Lowe Gets Real On Why The Financial Aspect Makes Things Complicated: “Where Is The Money Coming From?”
Speaking on the same podcast, Lowe put forth two important questions when talking about the salary reveal during the ASG. One was about where the money was coming from.
He looked at several options while trying to make his case about the source of money for the player’s salaries.
“Because if it’s million dollars a player or whatever it is, that’s 12 million dollars. It has to come from somewhere. I don’t think the union would be okay with it coming out of the 51% BRI, so it has to be extra money. Who’s supplying the extra money? Is it the owners out of the goodness of their hearts? That isn’t going to be it. Is it the sponsors? Well, that’s a lot of money to kick in.
Lowe does pose an interesting question, but maybe it’s time to look at the cause. Money does serve as a key factor despite popular opinion.
It’s unfortunate that what started off as pitting the best against the best is now nothing more than just a bunch of decorated names playing below-par basketball. Only time will tell if the ASG will hold the same importance in the years to come.
