Chris Paul silenced his critics in a big way this season. He proved that he’s still got a lot to give to a contending team and even though the outcome wasn’t what he expected, he was a shot away from making it to the Western Conference Semifinals.
Paul’s leadership on and off the court was remarkable. His grit and desire to win at all costs was a pretty obvious and contagious feeling night in and night out and the Oklahoma City Thunder, who were given 0.5% chances to make the playoffs at the start of the season.
And now that CP3 has once again showcased his talents, it seems like the Los Angeles Lakers would be tempted to trade for him, even if that meant absorbing his huge contract. According to Zach Buckley of Bleacher Report, the Los Angeles Lakers could put together a trade package involving Danny Green, Alex Caruso, Kyle Kuzma, and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope in return for the Point God:
“The Lakers are sending out four players for one and still not giving up enough money to match Paul’s mammoth salary. That’s a not insignificant part of why the Thunder may consider moving the 35-year-old floor general even after his first season back in the Sooner State was such a resounding success. If OKC is less than thrilled about paying Paul’s contract—$41.4 million next season, $44.2 million player option for 2021-22—L.A. should be ready to pounce,” the report claimed.
Obviously, absorbing that kind of deal is going to be a massive head-scratcher for Rob Pelinka and the Lakers but their title window may be closing sooner than expected if they don’t win this season.
Paul isn’t getting any younger and committing that kind of money on a 35-year old with a history with injuries may not be the wisest choice but Chris Paul is no ordinary 35-year-old. Moreover, he’s one of LeBron James’ closest friends and they crave a guy who could take playmaking duties off him for a while.
A Big 3 of Chris Paul, LeBron James, and Anthony Davis would dominate the league for sure if they manage to stay all healthy. Also, let’s not forget that CP3 was pretty close to becoming a Laker before David Stern vetoed his trade, which eventually led to him joining the Clippers. Now, maybe that’ll finally become a reality.
