Rob Pelinka Thought Mavericks GM Nico Harrison Was Joking When Luka Doncic Was Offered To Lakers

The Luka Doncic-Anthony Davis trade will go down as one of the most stunning moves in NBA history, and even Los Angeles Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka didn’t believe it was real at first. According to Brad Townsend of the Dallas Morning News, when Dallas Mavericks GM Nico Harrison first brought up the idea of trading Doncic, Pelinka thought it was a joke.

Harrison and Pelinka had been engaging in general basketball discussions for over a month, exchanging thoughts on the league and their respective teams. But when the Mavericks GM casually floated the question: “Would you ever do this?”, Pelinka immediately dismissed it as a joke.

Trading a 25-year-old, five-time All-NBA player with MVP potential seemed unthinkable, especially mid-season.

While Pelinka was initially shocked by the suggestion, Harrison’s tone quickly became more serious. The Mavericks had legitimate concerns about Doncic’s long-term future with the team, particularly regarding his conditioning, injury history, and the looming supermax extension that could have tied Dallas to him for another five years at $345 million.

Pelinka, still processing the possibility of acquiring one of the best players in the league, responded:

“Hmm. Interesting. Maybe I would.”

From that point, the idea began to build momentum, and within three weeks, the deal was in motion.

The Mavericks’ decision to move Doncic wasn’t just about his individual talent—it was about whether they could win a championship with him as their franchise player. Despite leading them to the NBA Finals last season, Doncic’s defensive struggles were exposed by the Boston Celtics, and his conditioning issues continued to be a concern.

Rather than committing long-term to Doncic’s supermax, Dallas chose to pivot to a defensive-oriented roster, pairing Anthony Davis with Kyrie Irving, Klay Thompson, and Daniel Gafford. Mavericks Governor Patrick Dumont fully supported Harrison’s bold decision, believing that defense wins championships and that Davis would give them a better chance at immediate success.

Once it became clear that Dallas was serious, Pelinka and the Lakers front office moved quickly to finalize the deal. The trade package included Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a 2029 first-round pick, bringing Luka Doncic, Maxi Kleber, and Markieff Morris to Los Angeles.

Despite initially dismissing the idea as unrealistic, Pelinka eventually realized the magnitude of the opportunity—a chance to secure the Lakers’ future beyond LeBron James with a generational superstar. Once the trade was completed, the Lakers were able to make one of the biggest midseason moves in league history without leaks or speculation.

What began as a casual, almost joking conversation between two GMs turned into a franchise-altering deal. Pelinka, who once thought the idea was impossible, now finds himself with a 25-year-old superstar to build around, while Dallas is betting on Anthony Davis to lead them to an immediate title push.

The NBA landscape has shifted in a way no one saw coming, proving once again that anything is possible in this league.
