Los Angeles Lakers insider Jason Timpf has proposed a massive trade that could address the team’s depth issues and significantly bolster their championship hopes.

The proposed three-team trade involves the Lakers acquiring four players—Bruce Brown, Collin Sexton, Walker Kessler, and Jonathan Mogbo—in exchange for a mix of current players and future picks, including two first-rounders. If executed, the trade would reshape the Lakers’ roster and provide a more balanced lineup to complement stars LeBron James and Anthony Davis.

Los Angeles Lakers receive: Bruce Brown, Collin Sexton, Walker Kessler, Jonathan Mogbo

Utah Jazz receive: Gabe Vincent, Jarred Vanderbilt, 2029 First-Round pick, 2031 First-Round pick (Top 10 protected)

Toronto Raptors receive: Rui Hachimura, Jalen Hood-Schfino, Cam Reddish, 2025 Second-Round pick (From Los Angeles Clippers), 2025 Second-Round pick

The Lakers’ biggest challenges this season have been consistency in their bench production and defensive execution, ranking 22nd in defensive rating. Adding Walker Kessler (11.3 points, 11.5 rebounds and 2.4 blocks, 72.4% FG) and Bruce Brown (8.0 points, 3.6 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 43.7% FG, 35.0% 3PT FG) addresses both issues.

One of the NBA’s best young rim protectors, Kessler would allow Anthony Davis to play his preferred power forward role while anchoring the paint defensively. Known for his versatility and toughness, Brown would improve the Lakers’ perimeter defense while providing secondary playmaking and scoring.

Collin Sexton (18.3 points, 2.9 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 48.0% FG, 41.3% 3PT FG)  brings much-needed scoring and energy to the Lakers’ backcourt. His ability to create off the dribble and attack the rim would provide a significant spark for the team, particularly when LeBron James is resting. Sexton’s scoring efficiency and explosiveness add a new dimension to the Lakers’ offense, which currently ranks 13th in the league.

Jonathan Mogbo (5.1 points, 4.1 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 46.4% FG, 32.0% 3PT FG), a rising young player, would add athleticism and versatility to the Lakers’ wing rotation. While his role may be limited initially, Mogbo’s potential could pay dividends in the long term, providing depth and defensive versatility.

By acquiring Gabe Vincent (4.6 points, 1.3 rebounds, 1.2 assists, 39.3% FG, 31.2% 3PT FG) and Jarred Vanderbilt, the Jazz gain two players who fit their rebuild timeline while adding future first-round picks. Vanderbilt returns to Utah, where his defensive versatility and rebounding were previously valued. The future picks give the Jazz flexibility to further build around their young core.

The Raptors receive Rui Hachimura (12.2 points, 5.2 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 49.1% FG, 41.1% 3PT FG), Jalen Hood-Schifino, and Cam Reddish, along with two second-round picks. Hachimura gives them a scoring forward, while Hood-Schifino provides a young guard with upside. This trade aligns with Toronto’s interest in younger players and draft assets for their ongoing roster reshaping.

At 23-18, the Lakers are currently fifth in the Western Conference but remain inconsistent. LeBron James and Anthony Davis have carried the team, yet the supporting cast lacks the firepower needed to elevate the team to championship contention. This trade addresses multiple roster deficiencies by upgrading the center position, improving perimeter defense, and adding bench scoring.

The proposed deal involves sacrificing future draft capital, but with James nearing the end of his career, the Lakers are in win-now mode. This trade would position them as a legitimate threat in the highly competitive Western Conference.

While the trade provides a clear pathway to contention, questions remain about whether the Lakers will part with two first-round picks, given their reluctance in recent years. However, with the Western Conference wide open and the team just a piece or two away from greatness, this blockbuster move could be the bold step they need to secure championship aspirations.
