It goes without saying that Stephen Curry is one of the greatest players of all time. He’s the best shooter we’ve ever seen and the most influential player of his generation. He’s also a two-time MVP and 3-time NBA Championship.
However, Curry’s haters still try and find a way to demeanor his legacy. Despite all his individual and collective accolades and milestones, they give him a hard time for never winning an NBA Finals MVP award.
For those who lack the context, Andre Iguodala was named Finals MVP in 2015, while Kevin Durant earned the honors in 2017 and 2018.
However, according to Ryen Rusillo of The Ringer, Curry actually got snubbed in 2015 because of the narrative of Iguodala’s defense on LeBron James:
“People get really caught up on what the story is, Iguodala’s effort became the story. In game 5, Curry had 37 points, 7-13 from three. That was a miss, the people that voted for Iguodala got it wrong” Rusillo said on his podcast.
Well, it’s hard to argue with Rusillo’s logic here. Curry led his team with 26 points per game to go along with 5.2 rebounds and 6.3 assists on 44% shooting and 38% from beyond the arc. Iguodala averaged 16.3 points with 5.8 rebounds and 4.0 dimes per game.
And while Andre’s defensive effort on James was remarkable, let’s not pretend like LeBron didn’t average 35.8 points, 13.3 rebounds, and 8.8 assists per game. I mean, it’s not like he locked him up and that’s the reason why the Golden State Warriors won the ring.
As for Kevin Durant’s Finals MVP, the 2018 award could’ve gone either way, so we should really consider the context when we discuss Stephen Curry’s lack of Finals MVPs.
At the end of the day, we don’t think Steph is too worried about that, but taking anything away from him at this point in his career is just being petty.
