Lakers May Show Renewed Trade Interest In Two-Way Target To Round Out Roster

Recent reports suggest that the Lakers may show a renewed interest in Andrew Wiggins should the Heat look to shed more salary in the coming months.

The Los Angeles Lakers were closely linked with Andrew Wiggins for the better part of the offseason. Although trade interest waned following the Miami Heat’s demands becoming clear, there appears to be a renewal of interest, per NBA insider Marc Stein.

Stein noted the potential for the Lakers to show a reinvigorated pursuit in signing Wiggins. He wrote:

“Wiggins, 30, will earn $28.2 million this season and holds a $30.2 million player option for 2026-27. I wouldn’t have classified him as a potential Purple and Gold target before Doncic’s long-term future was secured, but things are different now. So my sense is that the Lakers would have interest if the Heat, in coming weeks or months, decide to prioritize financial flexibility and look to reduce payroll.”

Stein makes an important note here by acknowledging Luka Doncic’s contract signing as a factor. When considering that the Lakers pulled away from trade negotiations before Doncic’s extension being confirmed, the potential for approaching Wiggins now seems more meaningful.

The Lakers’ approach to building around their young star is quite clear. By keeping cap space clear for next summer, the Lakers intend to acquire a star-caliber player, either in free agency or via trade.

When considering Andrew Wiggins‘ current contract situation, he could suddenly become a viable target again, particularly next summer when he can demand $30.2 million after opting into his contract.

However, Stein also touches upon a key aspect that could work in the Lakers’ favor. Given the recent trade involving Haywood Highsmith to shed salary, there is some indication that the Miami Heat could be interested in freeing up more cap space or reducing their payroll next season.

Should this be the case, the Lakers may have an avenue to facilitate this practice for the Heat by offering to take on Wiggins’ $28.2 million cap hit in a trade.

The Heat forward has long since been viewed as the ideal fit for the Lakers’ roster. Effectively slotting into the team’s frontcourt, adding Wiggins could help the Purple and Gold cement their reputation as a title contender.

The 30-year-old brings a unique blend of skill and experience, making him an immensely valuable asset. Along with his two-way upside, Wiggins also possesses a championship pedigree, a key aspect in helping the Lakers mount their title charge in the upcoming campaign.

With the Heat, Wiggins averaged 19.0 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 1.2 steals, and 1.0 blocks per game. He also showcased solid efficiency while scoring, with shooting splits of 45.8% overall, 36.0% from three-point range, and 73.1% from the free-throw line.

Acquiring Wiggins may be in the Lakers’ best interests, but they are unlikely to make any moves before training camp. Having made some noteworthy additions to their roster, the Purple and Gold are more likely to assess the team’s performance over the course of the season before opting to make any further adjustments.
