Seth Curry has admitted that this is the correct juncture of his career to team up with superstar elder brother Stephen Curry. During his introductory press conference with the Golden State Warriors, the 35-year-old shooting guard revealed his disposition.
“This is definitely special. It feels like a good time in both of our careers for me to be here. It’s funny that Steve (Kerr) and Mike (Dunleavy), last year, were asking me, ‘Would I ever wanna team up with Steph?’, Cause I know I’ve said it a few times in the past that I don’t wanna be on the same team… But it’s good to be here at this stage,” Curry said.
The Golden State Warriors are looking for a consistent perimeter shooter who can come off the bench and provide some valuable offense. Last year, the former Hornets guard led the NBA with a 45.6% shooting from the three-point line. Seth has carved out a name for himself as one of the accurate three-point shooters in the league. But he’s spent most of his career playing different roles for teams ranging from floor-spacer to bench player to starter, and has stayed resilient through it all.
He’s been able to survive in the league for over a decade despite going undrafted in 2013. Thus, he was reluctant to join forces with his brother and play under his shadow. Now, it seems he understands that even the aging Warriors need all the help they can get, and that makes it a good time to join his elder brother.
“Veteran team, get back to trying to win some games and trying to win a championship. So, it’s fun to be here, always got a lot of love from the bay, and I felt like it was one of my homes. Steph has been there for so long, so it’s good to be here,” he added.
One person is a little disappointed, though. Dell Curry, their father, and a veteran for the Charlotte Hornets, wanted Curry to stay there and see them through a new ownership phase. But Curry signed with his elder brother’s contending team. Outside of that, the entire family is elated that the two brothers will be uniting on the court.
“Everybody’s excited about it, the whole family. Instead of watching multiple games, it should be easier to watch just one game. Everybody’s excited about it except for maybe my dad, who didn’t want to see me leave Charlotte,” Curry revealed.
It was even reported that the former Mavericks player tried to buy his brother’s famous number 30 from him to wear with the Warriors. But Steph politely declined, saying he didn’t need the money and the league would also look down upon it, possibly. So Seth Curry will wear the number 31 for the Golden State Warriors. He will be on an Exhibit-9 contract, which means he will probably be waived off before the season starts and then brought back in during mid-November.
On paper, it is a prove yourself contract, meaning Curry will need to showcase his value during training camp. But some reports suggest that the Warriors structured his contract in this manner to adjust themselves to the salary cap. The Warriors are giving it a fair shot with the roster construction. Despite deep doubts over their empty roster spots for most of the season, they were able to gather a decent group of veterans to accompany Jimmy Butler and Stephen Curry.
Not only is this the first time the Curry brothers will be uniting, it is also the first time the superstar shooter will be paired with a true stretch-five. For a short while, the Warriors brought in DeMarcus Cousins, but he was barely able to play due to injuries. So Al Horford will be the first true stretch five Curry will get to play with. The spacing these two provide could be a massive advantage for the Warriors in lineups featuring both of these NBA champions.
