Adidas Reportedly Plans To Discontinue Trae Young’s Signature Shoe Line

Trae Young’s fourth signature shoe with Adidas is set to be launched this year and it appears it will be the last one of the line. According to Sole Retriever the Trae Young 4 will be Young’s final signature shoe with Adidas.

“Sources have confirmed with Sole Retriever that the upcoming Trae Young 4 will be his last signature sneaker.”

There is no word on why Adidas has taken this step, but you’d assume it would be down to the line not being quite as popular as expected. Young’s first signature shoe, the Trae Young 1, was released in 2021 and proved to be a hit but the next two, which came out in 2022 and 2023, didn’t do quite so well.

It would make little sense for Adidas to continue the line for much longer if it isn’t generating much interest. This doesn’t necessarily mean the brand won’t be releasing any Young shoes, however. His budget model, Trae Unlimited, isn’t being shelved by the looks of it and some other models could be released at some point too.

It will be interesting, though, to see if this decision has an impact on the partnership between the two sides. Young signed a four-year deal with Adidas back in 2018 and agreed to a multi-year extension with the brand in 2020. The Atlanta Hawks star might have to consider a switch now if he wants to continue having a signature shoe.

Young will have suitors if he does hit sneaker free agency. While the 25-year-old’s stock isn’t as high now as it was a couple of years ago, he did just average 25.7 points, 2.8 rebounds, 10.8 assists, 1.3 steals, and 0.2 blocks per game in the 2023-24 season. He remains a big name and would have some options to choose from.

Trae Young Reckons He Would Have Been The Greatest Ever If He Was 6’8″

Young has had a fine career thus far, but he thinks it would have been a lot better if he had been taller. Young felt if he had been 6’8″, he would have been the greatest player ever.

“I used to hate when I used to see guys that are tall and that’s all. They just out there tall, and that’s all. If I was 6’8″, I feel like I would be the best player ever to play this game. Just because of my mentality, the way I play, and the smartness I have about this game, I feel like I can bring a lot to the game.”

“But there are a lot of deficiencies because I’m 6’1″, it’s tough. I am playing in a big man’s game. I don’t know.”

It is indeed a big man’s game and while guards have had a lot of success in recent years, it still helps to be taller. If you look at the last 10-odd years, Stephen Curry is the only short player who has managed to dominate games and lead a team to a championship.

Nikola Jokic, Giannis Antetokounmpo, LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Kawhi Leonard, and Jayson Tatum are the others to have led their team to glory in that time, and all of them are fairly tall. So, Young certainly would have done better on the court and had more success if he was much taller, but I wouldn’t go as far as to say he could have been the best ever.
