La La Anthony has chosen to keep her last name even after her divorce from NBA legend Carmelo Anthony, and the reason behind it is deeply rooted in her love and support for her son, Kiyan. During a recent appearance at Fanatics Fest in New York City, La La explained that her decision to keep the Anthony surname is tied directly to her son’s burgeoning basketball career.

“The moment of being able to buy Kiyan’s NBA jersey will be crazy. That’s why I haven’t changed my last name yet. I’m gonna keep it around for a little while!”

As Kiyan continues to rise as a top high school basketball prospect, La La anticipates the day she can proudly wear his NBA jersey. She expressed that keeping the Anthony name is a way to stay connected to Kiyan’s journey, as he follows in his father’s footsteps toward a potential NBA career.

Despite the couple’s separation in 2017 and their eventual divorce in 2021, La La has maintained a close relationship with Carmelo, especially when it comes to co-parenting their son.

La La’s decision is also a reflection of her commitment to her son, as she plans to support him regardless of which team drafts him. When asked if it would be difficult to root for a team other than the New York Knicks, La La made it clear that her allegiance lies with Kiyan.

“Not that hard! I’m sorry I’m going where my kid goes! Wherever my kid is at, that’s who I’m rooting for. It’s different when it’s your kid. It’s just a whole different ball game. It feels like a brand new journey that I’m going on with him.”

La La’s choice to keep the Anthony name is not about holding on to the past or her marriage to Carmelo Anthony but is instead a gesture of support for Kiyan as he carves out his own path in the world of basketball. She understands the significance of her son’s potential future in the NBA and wants to be there every step of the way, proudly carrying the family name.

Through her decision, La La Anthony exemplifies the deep love and dedication she has for her son, choosing to keep the name that connects her to him as he strives to build his own legacy in the sport that made his father a household name.
