Former NHL defenseman Ryan Whitney got to play golf with Michael Jordan once, but it didn’t end up being an all too pleasant experience for him. On the Spittin’ Chiclets podcast, Whitney recounted getting destroyed on the golf course by Jordan.
“He doesn’t say a word to me, we get to the 17, the 35th hole of the day,” Whitney said. “It’s a par 5, I’m on in two. He’s dead, like the guy’s short game was insane… Hits this flop shot, like insane. I putt it right inside him. He makes his birdie putt, I miss. First thing he said all day, and he goes, ‘That’s right, bitch.’ I’m like, ‘Oh my god.'”
Unfortunately for Whitney, Jordan wasn’t done talking trash to him.
“So, then we go 36, he beats me,” Whitney continued. “… I finish the last hole. Another press, lose that hole too. He’s like, ‘A scratch golfer? Bitch, you couldn’t scratch my wife’s ass.'”
Whitney had no retort and decided to quietly leave the course after paying up.
“I just left. I just paid him 10 grand and left,” Whitney stated. “I felt this big. I’m like this guy, he’s pumping rap tunes the whole time that say his name in the song. I am like ‘What planet am I on right now?’”
It certainly isn’t much of a surprise that Jordan acted in this manner. He has always been an incredibly competitive individual and loves talking trash. Once his NBA career ended, golf became the only sport that got those competitive juices flowing.
We have heard some incredible stories over the years of Jordan talking trash to his opponents and betting ridiculous amounts of money as well. Charles Barkley once revealed that Jordan played golf for $300K a hole, which dwarves the amount Whitney had to pay up here.
J. R. Smith Spoke About Michael Jordan Talking Trash To Him When They Played Golf
J. R. Smith is one of the best golfers among current and former NBA players, but even he did not stand a chance against the Chicago Bulls icon. Smith shared what it felt like for him, to play against Jordan.
“Man, it was unbelievable. It was one of the most childish feelings I’ve felt as a grown-ass man. He smoked me.” When asked how badly Jordan beat him, J. R. added, “The first round we ended up even. In the second round, he smoked me by like three shots.”
He also revealed how Jordan hilariously talked trash to him.
“So we was betting, right? I doubled down on my bets and I was like 5 front, 5 back, and 5 overall. He was like ‘Alright cool.’ I said ‘Whoa, Hundreds, not Thousands, Hundreds.’ He was like, ‘No, I know what you’re talking about. I know what you meant.’ and then he threw this jab at me, low-key and I was just like, ‘Ooh, that was a good one.’, he said ‘Yeah, you had a good career. It wasn’t a great one. You had a good one.'”
You know that was a good one when Smith himself admits it. He just didn’t have a great enough career to the point where he could bet the kind of big bucks that Jordan used to.
