Mitchell Robinson is a big man at 7’0″ and he appears to have a very big heart as well. During the game between the New York Knicks and the Detroit Pistons on Thursday night, Butch Stockton, Robinson’s high school coach, shared how the Knicks big man invited him to stay with him at his house.

“My wife passed away in September,” Stockton said. “When my wife was in the hospital, Mitchell came each day to visit her. Became very close to myself and my wife and after the funeral, Mitchell told everyone that he was gonna bring me to New York with him.”

Stockton’s wife, Dawn, passed away in September after a battle with metastatic cancer. He was living in Louisiana at the time but Robinson told him to come to New York to get his mind back in place.

“He said, ‘Coach there’s no reason you stay down here in Louisiana anymore. You come to New York with me and enjoy yourself and get your mind back straight because you know how much you loved your wife.’ And it’s just been a great situation, to be honest with you,” Stockton stated.

"[Mitch Robinson] said come to New York with me, and enjoy yourself and get your mind back straight."

This was truly a beautiful gesture on Robinson’s part. Stockton was his head coach at Chalmette High School, which was where his career really took off. He had transferred there before his junior year and under Stockton’s guidance, Robinson’s stock rose tremendously.

He went from being an unheralded prospect at first to the 36th pick of the 2018 NBA Draft. While Robinson deserves most of the credit for his success, Stockton, who is in the Louisiana Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame, certainly played a role in his getting to where he is today.

Clips of Stockton talking about Mitchell’s gesture spread like wildfire on social media. After the game, which the Knicks won 118-112, Robinson was asked about his decision to invite his high school head coach to live with him.

“He’s a great guy,” Robinson said. “He helped me get to where I’m at. Bringing him along with me after everything that had happened over the summer. It works out for the best. I can help him out (like) he helped me.”

Isn’t that what life’s all about? Robinson said Stockton would be living with him for the year and he felt this was the least he could do for him. It’s wonderful to see the kind of relationship they have and a video of Stockton cheering for Robinson after he hit two free throws late in the game went viral as well.

Robinson would finish the game with 6 points, 9 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, and 1 block. He has once again been a force on the defensive end and the glass for the Knicks and has helped them get off to an 11-7 start to the campaign.

Mitchell Robinson Wildly Explained Why An NBA Basketball Turns Brown

The 25-year-old went viral for all the right reasons here, but that wasn’t the case just a few days ago. A discussion regarding the color of the basketball led to Robinson widely explaining why an NBA basketball turns brown.

“It’s got dirt and bacteria. People here don’t wash their hands. There’s a few people in this league that wash their hands. A few of them. But I can. I do. I wash my hands.”

I’m sure Stockton appreciates the fact that Mitchell washes his hands. It was a hilarious statement on the big man’s part and these two instances sum him up really. He is an incredibly funny individual who also has a heart of gold, and you wish there were more like him around.
