Tyrese Maxey is having a breakout season and dropped 50 points in the 76ers’ win against the Pacers. During his post-game interview, Maxey was quick to show love to teammate Kelly Oubre Jr., who’s currently recovering from a series of injuries suffered in a car accident.

“Man, this had nothing to do with me. This is all Kelly Oubre, man. We praying for him, man. Love my dawg. I just met him but I love him. I hope he gets well soon.”

Maxey pushed through some tough emotions to have the best performance of his young career so far. Oubre will be fine and is expected to return to basketball at some point in the season, but to see a teammate be in a situation like the one he’s in without any fault of his own has to be tough to work through.

Maxey’s emergence this season has helped the team deal with the loss of James Harden. He’s averaging 28.6 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 7.2 assists as the 76ers sit atop the East with an 8-1 record when many expected the team to fall a ways behind the Bucks and Celtics as title contenders in the conference.

What Happened To Kelly Oubre Jr.?

Last night, we got the update that Kelly Oubre Jr. had been struck by a car while walking near his residence. Multiple members of the 76ers staff rushed to the hospital as Oubre was being treated, with the only confirmation about his future playing status being that he should return this season but after missing significant time.

Oubre has suffered a broken rib and various cuts as a result of the accident. Given Oubre was on his feet and walking around when he was struck by the car, we all should be thankful that he didn’t suffer from anything serious that could tragically have taken his life or left him unable to move or play basketball again.

“76ers G/F Kelly Oubre Jr. sustained broken ribs and an assortment of bruises and cuts to his body after being struck by a car in Philadelphia on Saturday night. Oubre fortunately avoided more serious injuries, but will now miss significant time.”

Oubre was snubbed by most teams in free agency before signing with the 76ers late in the offseason. Since signing, he has averaged 16.3 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 1.4 steals and looked like a breath of fresh air for the franchise. Losing him will have a big effect on the team, especially given the circumstances. But with Maxey’s emergence as a genuine star and Joel Embiid continuing to play at an MVP level, the 76ers have a chance of being lethal.

Nick Nurse has transformed the franchise and has already found the perfect roles for most of his rotation. That’s why Oubre was having the success that he had before his injury. Hopefully, he still has a place in the rotation to make a high-caliber impact on the roster, as they hope to be the best in the East this season.
