Even though the Philadelphia 76ers recently lost to the Milwaukee Bucks, there were definitely some bright spots for the franchise. One of them was young guard Tyrese Maxey, who put up 31 points, 4 rebounds, and 8 assists for the team.
After the game, Maxey got praise from coach Nick Nurse, with the coach noting that Maxey “stayed aggressive” despite a slow start.
“Well, he got off to a super slow start obviously with the foul trouble. He was out early but we ended up being able to play him pretty much the rest of the game,” Nurse said per Sam DiGiovanni of ClutchPoints. “I thought he did a great job of getting downhill and drawing contact and getting in the lane and all that stuff. He stayed aggressive. He didn’t really have it going there for a long stretch and for him to bounce back and just kind of start get it going with everything — started making some shots, started making some layups, started getting hit a lot when he was driving. So, that was good.”
There is no doubt that remaining confident is highly important for any star player, especially a young one like Maxey. Despite the loss, this game is another indication that Maxey could potentially be a cornerstone the team can build around in the future.
Last year, Maxey averaged 20.3 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game for the 76ers while shooting 43.4% from 3PT range. Hopefully, he can take another step forward this season, and help the 76ers compete for a championship.
Tyrese Maxey Says The 76ers Still Want To Win A Championship Without James Harden
Even given the situation with star James Harden, the 76ers are still a fairly talented squad. In fact, Maxey previously claimed that the 76ers will still try to win a championship without Harden.
“I think with the position that the Sixers are in we can’t ever see a season as ‘a wash.’ We have talent. We have the reigning MVP on our team. We have to go out there and expect to win. Expect to still try to complete our goal. It’ll definitely be even more difficult now that one of our best players has decided as of right now he doesn’t want to come back and play. That’s how life goes.”
We will see how far the 76ers manage to get without Harden. The guard has definitely been an impactful player for the team, but they also have the players to potentially make up for his absence.
Tyrese Maxey Needs To Step Forward For The 76ers
Without Harden present, there is an opportunity for Maxey to take on a bigger role. The team desperately needs someone to step up and provide offense next to Joel Embiid, and perhaps that player can be Maxey.
The key, of course, is Maxey remaining aggressive as he did against the Bucks. Even though the 76ers lost, his process was entirely correct, and it was good to see him thriving and playing free.
Hopefully, we see Maxey become an All-Star-level player this season. His talent suggests that he can do it, but consistency is very important when it comes to getting voters to pay attention.
